Phonic Alphabet

"Toe by Toe" and "Alpha to Omega" are both very good phonic programs. These resources are meant to compliment these programs. You use these resources to teach the sounds of the letters and not the names of the letters. I have developded these resources because the phonic alphabets devleloped for the above two programs are constrained by the size of the manuals. Do not forget to fold Flip Alphabet sheets in half to craete flip effect.

A4alphabet.zip     Flipalphabet.zip Please note that these files around 1mb in size.

Literacy Worksheets

This zipped file contains over 100 basic literacy worksheets. Before viewing these files it is essential to copy and paste the four included fonts into the fonts folder. The fonts folder is to be found in the Control Panel. When you copy and paste the fout true type fonts into this folder the worksheets will appear in the correct form. This zipped file is around 600k in size and you need to have Winzip installed onto your computer if you wish to view same.

Consonant Blends.

These consonant blends have been sourced from The Alpha to Omega Phonics Program. Please remember that the flip cards must be folded for the desired flip effect.

Conblends.zip     Flipconblends.zip Please note that these files are 1mb in size.

Concentration Grids.

I use these concentration grids with very weak academic children. I use them to develop concentration skills, left to right orientation, basic recognition of letters, visual perception etc. They are designed so that even the weakest child can complete these sheets. Please note: You must view these sheets in Word 2000 or better. In Word 97 the images get pushed to the left side!!

SOME OF THE CONCENTRATION GRIDS ARE QUITE LARGE. CIRCA 2MB. THIS COULD MEAN A DOWNLOADTIME OF 20 MINUTES ON SOME CONNECTIONS.

Word Attack Grids.

Marie Stubbings gave an excellent talk on emergant literacy which was organised by Carlow Education centre. Among the many useful suggestions she made was the following. If  a child has difficulty with a particular set of words, place these words in groups of five in a grid. Get the child to read these words in a concentrated manner to learn them.
What I have done is to place the three Dolch lists into  grids. I have found these grids to be quite good in teaching very weak children a core sight vocabulary. This allows them to use their phonological skills on more difficult words.
I am using these grids as part of a teachnet.ie project. One of the requirements of the project is that we make  these resources available to other teachers for feedback and comment. So I would be especially grateful for any feedback re the resources on this site at askeabns@iol.ie
    Thanking you, John Farrell, Carlow.

Time Flip Cards

These flip cards are very useful re the teaching of time. Please note that cards must be folded horizontally for the flip effect to work. I have also zipped them to reduce size down to 67kb.

Time.zip

Money Flip Cards

These cards are excellent for teaching children the addition, subtraction of money. When downloaded, you print up the sheets. You then fold the cards horizontally to get the flip card effect. Please note that these are large downloads as they contain a considerable amount of graphics. e.g The euro symbol is a graphic as different computers can use different fonts for the euro. I avoid this by using the euro sign as a graphic. However, this increases the size of the download.

IMPORTANT!! Some of these files are  large and may take a few minutes to download. However, they are excellent and they work very effectively with the children.

Place Value Flip Cards

These flip cards i.e. flash cards folded horizontally, are very useful re teaching the place value of number. Teaching children numeracy is more than getting children to count from one to a hundred. I hope you find these cards of some practical use. All I can say is that my own pupils enjoy them very much.

Sequencing Exercises.

The children enjoy these exercises tremendously. Please remember to fold the sheets horizontally to create the flip card effect. With the colour sequencing excercise, make sure that the card is the right way up when doing the excercise!!

Math Flip Flash Cards.

I find these flip flash cards excellent for revising tables. They are also very useful for paired Maths. Please note each zipped file contains 100 sheets organised on the basis of ten per table. Please note sheets must be folded horizontally. It is also a good idea to get them laminated as ink is quite expensive.

Flip Card Tables.zip     Minus Flip Card tables.zip

Phonic Flip Flash Cards.

These cards work on the same basis as flash cards with one important difference. You have one piece of information on one side of the card e.g. a blend. One the other side of the card you have two seperate blends. You sound out the blend you want the child to identify. When they correctly identify the blend you flip the card over to confirm correct answer.[Please note: If you are working with a large group you may find it useful to colour code the letters on the cards. With a very small group this is not necessary as the child can point out the correct answer.]

How do I make these cards? These cards were created in Microsoft Word. They generally come in sets of 50. To get a good overview of the cards available set viewing ratio to 10%. Print up the required number. FOLD THE CARDS IN HALF!!! This is how you create the Flip aspect of these flash cards. I would strongly advise that you would get the cards laminated as they get a fair bit of usage.

I would very much appreciate any advise re improving these cards especially with regards to the phonic aspect of same. askeabns@iol.ie

Computer Literacy Board.

When teaching a large group of children how to work a computer a CLB is an invaluable aid. It is a copy of an actual keyboard that is colour coded. This allows the teacher to ensure that the child actually knows which key is the shift key, enter key etc. Print up the required amount, back them with hardboard and have them laminated. This should ensure a long life for this aid. Distribute them among the children. Teach them the keys and their functions. This can take a few lessons. The big advantage is that when a child goes to the computer to type up  their work they will know where the full stop is, they will know how to get a capital letter, they will know how to correct errors etc. A CLB enables a teacher to teach a large group basic computer literacy in an effective manner.

Blank Gaelic A4 Poster Alphabet.

During the school year there may be occasions when you have to put up posters e.g Welcoming the local football team, Christmas concert, etc. Right click on the letter you want and save it on to the desktop where you can open it with your imaging software. The images of the letters are too large to open properly in your browser.I find Irfanview is a an excellent piece of imaging software. You can then copy the image of the letter into your word document. You can then resize it to your needs, usually A4. When you have printed up the letters you can get the children to colour in the letters as they are blank. A good tip would be to colour around the letter in yellow crayon as it makes it stand out better. Each letter is about 150k to download which would be about thirty seconds on a standard line.

Picasso Art Lesson.

Mrs. Daly, First class teacher, brought in some prints by Picasso. There was a discussion on Picasso and how he painted his pictures. Then the boys painted their Picasso pictures. These zipped files contains two pictures painted by Eoghan Farrell age six in first class 2002. One of the advantages of this lesson is that it does not matter if the eye is up on the forehead!! Each file is 384k in size and is in jpeg format.

Lights Out

As part of our Green schools iniative we have put up reminder notices over the lights to get the children to turn off the lights when leaving the room. They are done in a fun manner to attract the notice of the children. A good tip would be to laminate same to give them a long life. Right click to downlaod and save.

Pegboards and Geoboards.

Pegboards and Geoboards are useful devices for teaching geometric shapes, sorting, counting, identifying colour, identifying number patterns etc. However, it can be very tedious and time consuming to put a pattern on the blackboard for the children to follow. The following resources are sheets that can be printed up allowing the children to work independantly with their pegboards and geoboards. You can right click on the resource and save it to the desktop. Also, you can left click and print it up directly. Technical stuff: I created these worksheets on the Eircom computer given to each Primary school The version of word used was Word 97. It is the symbol map that came with this package that I used to create the pegs. If you have a different version of Word the symbols may not match! So if you encounter this problem have a look at these files on your Eircom computer. We would like to acknowledge Mrs. Keogh's and Mr. Farrell's work in creating these resources.

The Euro.

With the introduction of the Euro we are making these two resources available. The first is a true type font of the Euro. This is useful if you have an old computer and wish to insert the euro symbol symbol into your work. With more modern keyboards you will not need this font. However, you may find it of some use, especially with the older machines.

I am also including the setup files for an excellent program called Europe. This is a brilliant program for teaching the countries and capital cities of Europe. Very effective. It is also a freeware program. I have placed both in a crompessed file. You will need Winzip to open these compressed files which are about 880kb's in size. Rember to Right-click on the link and select Save Target as.... Usually you would save to the desktop. It takes about five minutes to download this file.

Readathons and Readalongs.

Readathons and readalongs are excellent means of promoting reading as well as raising badly needed funds for the school. Please feel free to download these sponsorship cards if you are thinking of running a readathon or a readalong. [A readalong is exactly the same as a readathon except that the child reads the book with their parent/guardian. This ensures that the junior side of the school is also involved.]

Important Tip: The downloads are a standard A4 size. If you have a half decent photo-copier you will be able to reduce sponsorship card therby getting two cards onto one sheet. Cuts down the cost of photocopying if you are doing this in a large school.

Worksheets and Certs.

Certificates are excellent for motivating students. To help you create certs I have included the following fonts and dingbats to the site so that you may download them for your schools use. They are Zipped which means you must have WinZip installed. The sites I downloaded these fonts all stated they were freeware.

You install a dingbat the same as you would a font. When you select the relevant dingbat from the toolbar the images are directly inserted into your wordprocessing package. They are an excellent easy introduction for children to clipart.

These discipline worksheets are a more effective alternative to lines as they are easily photocopied, have a certain educational value and are specific re the offence involved. However, they are only one side of the coin. Certs, footballs for breaktime, lining up competitions etc are also very effective. A word of praise goes a long way.
