The following are some programs that we use and have found useful. We have a software library of 150+ shareware/freeware program. The programs below have been selected for their usefulness and small size. Size is important as large programs can take hours to download. The following will be added to. Please e-mail the school at askeabns@iol.ie if you have further suggestions. Please note these files are zipped.You need a program called Winzip to decompress them. Go to http://www.winzip.com for further details. I.Q. Test: This is a self correcting and self timing I.Q. test. It is not perfect but it does give the children a very good idea of what an I.Q. test entails. Size: 16kb Correct: This is a quiz program with hundreds of questions categorised into various sections. Click on File / Open to select desired quiz. Size: 139kb Draughts:With this program you can play draughts against the computer at an easy level or against a friend which is much more fun. Digital Diary:This is a calendar and diary combined. Ideal for keeping note and tracking events. Very good for science projects where you need to do regular recording. Tessellation:This is a fun program that deals with teesellation which is part of the new curriculum. It has four levels of difficulty and is more suitable for senior classes. Clicking on the mouse buttons rotaes the pieces. Fun Calculator:Very nice calculator which also deals with fractions. It also shows how answer is arrived at. Logo:This is a programming language designed for children. It is also referred to in the new curriculum on P.62 Mathematics Teacher Guidelines. What works very well also are programmable bricks!! Cloze: Use this program to create your own Cloze exercises on the computer. An ideal project for a student in the school on work experience to create a bank of cloze exercises for the children. More suitable for senior end of the school. Word Rescue: Firm favourite with the children. Rescue the words from the Meanies!! This is a DOS program so would not be suitable for Windows XP Works fine otherwise. remember that the exe file for this program is WR1.exe
