Ogham Millenium Project
For our Millenium Project we iniated and partook in various projects. Our central project was the erection and dedication of an Ogham stone in the school grounds. We were going to do the dedication during the Summer solstice but we felt that St.Johns Day would be more appropriate. From this central project we had several ancilliary projects.
1: We e-mailed schools around Ireland. We did this via the Scoilnet, INTO and Web66 school directories. We requested them to post on to us two small indigenous rocks from their area. The response to this was very poor. So, we gave each child in the school an Irish penny. This they placed in the foundation of the Ogham stone. Afterwards, each boy got a packet of sweets. The purpose of this was two fold as it marked the end of the Irish penny and it also ensured that the Ogham stone got a healthy dose of luck!
2:The boys in sixth class were given various Irish historical websites to review. The emphasis of these sites was on the Millennium.I would like to acknowledge the advice of Tommy Maher who gave us some marvellous links. He distributes these links through the INTO history mailing list. The Ogham Alphabet The Irish invented bar codes. Stones of England Skellig Photographs Newgrange Dun Aonghasa - Galway Archaeology Ireland
3: Irish Posters. The boys in Fifth class have been working very hard over the last few weeks creating Irish Posters. Each boy created their own poster using Celtic design and old gaelic script. Feel free to print these up and put on display in your classroom. They work best on coloured paper. Please note, you must download and install the following fonts to view posters properly. This page was uploaded by Desmond Berry Fifth class. The boys used Word 97 to create these posters and you must use this to view posters corrctly. Age of Kings is an excellent historical simulation set in the time of the Celts. we use a demo that came free with the Christmas edition of PC Live. We change the game settings to single click as opposed to two as it makes it easier for the children. See http://www.microsoft.com/games/age2 for further details and relevant screenshots. This program and its companion Age of Empires which is set in Roman times is a constant favourite with the boys. Stands up to constant repeated usage. Children have access to these programs only when they have finished their word processing worksheet correctly. |
