The Christian Brothers opened Ardscoil Ris on Limerick's North Circular Road on 1 September 1963 when it welcomed 52 students. The teaching staff then consisted of the principal, Brother McGinnity, and Mr Michael Field, later to be the first lay principal of the establishment. Classes were held in an old Coach House until the first purpose-built classrooms became available. This first intake included Pat Cox, then a noted debater, later a distinguished academic, television journalist-presenter and politician, now sitting in the European Parliament for Europe. From these small beginning the school, augmented by periodic extensions, grew into its modern form, containing over 700 students and a teaching staff of 45. The school enjoys a wide reputation for academic and sporting excellence.
