Birds around Newtownards
Newtownards is at the top of Strangford Lough which is an inlet of the Irish
sea with a wide muddy foreshore.  It is an area of great ornithological
importance because waders, ducks and geese like to winter here.  Between
September and March is the best time to see the birds.  When there is a high
tide some oyster catchers, dunlin and sometimes lapwings come to feed on the
grassy area at the edge of the school grounds.

Every year Brent Geese come to Strangford Lough where they spend the winter.
They like to eat the eel grass which grows on the shore. This year there is a
giant picture of a goose in a field near our school.

There is a quarry on the side of Scrabo hill and Sand martins, magpies,
jackdaws, ravens and kestrels nest in it.

Please read the poems that P5 wrote about birds:

Hello, I'm a bird,
What bird am I?
Can you guess?
I'm blue, I've got a yellow chest
If you can't guess you must be stupid,
If you can you're the best.

I fly around fields,
I fly around gardens,
I fly around your playground,
If you can't guess it'
I'm a Blue Tit.

I'm watching you,
I'm watching you,
When you plant seeds,
I eat worms,
I'm a Blue Tit.

My favourite bird is a robin
The robin has a red chest
and a cheeky smile.
The robin is nice and has blue eyes.
It flies down to the ground and eats bread
The robin has brown on its back.

I watch the little Starlings,
The way they run about,
I watch the way they jump all day
And the way they jump all night.
They also like to fly a lot
                          Mostly round your house.
They fly quite low to the ground
                                Their favourite food is worms.
