Blackrock College Team Wins Sea & Space Super Prize
Congratulations to Stephen Kearney, Cian Wilson and Eamonn McKeogh. They have won a trip to Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guyana, and to the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope at Cerro Paranal, Chile. The trip is the Super Prize for the Sea & Space Newspaper Competition, organised within the framework of the European Week for Scientific and Technological Culture.
Fr. Ernest Ayittey Akorsou C.S.Sp.
We extend a very warm welcome to Fr. Ernest who has joined us on the teaching staff this year. A native of Ghana he was born in 1968 in the village of Lolobi-Huyeasem in the Volta region.
30 Members of Staff Taking Course in Computer Studies
For two hours every Monday and Thursday evenings 30 members of staff attend a training course in computer studies.
Greenwatch ... Wins Award
GREENWATCH, the environmental magazine produced by the 41 Geography class under the direction of Mr James Campbell, has won the provincial award in an environment competition sponsored by the ESB and the Northern Ireland Electricity Board. The magazine which is produced annually is widely regarded for its consistently high standard.
Rugby
Tom O'Donoghue has been elected Captain of the SCT. Gary Brown and Paul Drew have been elected as vice captain and secretary respectively. James Mannion has been elected Captain of the JCT. Colm Treston and Peter Leonard have been elected as vice captain and secretary respectively. Both the senior and junior teams remain unbeaten in friendly games to date. Several players have been selected for provincial trials.
Senior Soccer Team Wins In Extra Time
Blackrock College Senior Soccer Team advanced to the next round of the Schools' Cup Competition on Wednesday 7th October when they defeated Ferbane in extra time.

Sixth Year Retreat
The Sixth Year Retreats took place in sixteen venues throughout the country in late September. These days of reflection began with Mass in the College Chapel for the students and their parents that set the tone for a time of renewal outside the busy confines of the College.
National Chamber Choir Visits Blackrock College
The National Chamber Choir under conductors Colin Mawby and David Brophy gave a performance in the College Chapel last month. The programme included works by Glinka, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov. Most local interest centred on the performance of Lee Hayes' choral arrangement of the Dylan Thomas poem Fern Hill.
Evening Seminars for 5th Year Parents
Evening seminars were organised by the Career Guidance and Counselling Department for fifth year parents on three consecutive Monday evenings concluding on Monday 12th October.
SCT Tour
During the mid-term the SCT (Senior College Team) visited Worcester and played two games. They won their first game against Old Swinford Hospital School 27-5 and in the second game they defeated Royal Grammar School, Worcester by 41-3.
Rehearsals Begin For College Musical
Rehearsals have begun for the college presentation of Jesus Christ Superstar with lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Weber. It will be staged in mid January under the direction of Mr Toirleac O'Brien. The producer is Mr Tom Ryan and the musical director is Ms Úna O'Kane.
Blackrock College Radio
Blackrock College Radio will be on the air between 8.00 am and 6.30 pm from Monday 23rd to Friday 27th November. It will broadcast on 96.7 FM and will be heard within a five mile radius. BCR is a project of the Transition Year students and most of the students in the year have been involved to a greater or lesser degree.
Ms Valérie Herve
Ms Valérie Herve who joined the staff this year is a native of Pontivy, formerly known as Napoleonville, a town with a population of 17,000 in the centre of Brittany. "I think of myself as Breton first and then French", she said.
Golf Team Continues To Progress
The College golf team has qualified for the finals of the Leinster Matchplay Championships. They defeated St. Michael's in the Semi-Finals. The members of the team are: James Flood, Michael Paul O'Brien, Gavin Pierce, Eoin O'Connor, Thomas Kennedy and Greg Pollard. We wish them success in their next match.
