Welcome to our project about

SNAKES!!

Snakes eat only live food. Most snakes eat rats, birds, lizards and rabbits. Small snakes eat mice, worms, frogs, snails and insects. Snakes called hook-nosed snakes eat mostly spiders. African egg-eating snakes eat only birds' eggs. But guess what the favourite food of some snakes is? Other snakes! Black Racer snakes eat more snakes than any other kind of food.

Facts About Snakes !!!!!

Did you know?

1. A sidewinder snake crawls by jumping along the ground, sideways!

2. Rattlesnakes send out warning signals by shaking the rattles on the end of its tail.

3. The beautiful coral snake has the most toxic venom’s of all the American snakes, but it is rarely seen. It is a relative of the cobras.. It lives near water and eats mainly birds and small animals.

4. The anaconda is the largest South American snake. It is not quite the largest snake in the world, but is the bulkiest!

Left:  Venomous snakes, such as this Eastern Diamond Back Rattlesnake, make new venom constantly in glands behind fangs. Snakes can open their mouths wider than any other animal can!

Right: Each spring, thousands of garter snakes leave their hibernating dens and disperse into the surrounding countryside.

African Egg-Eating Snake!

Snakes can swallow things that are bigger than their heads. This snake is going to swallow a chicken egg. Snake's jaws are able to come apart and it's skin stretches. The water in its mouth makes the egg slippery, so it slides in easily. The egg slides down the snake's throat. A bone in the snake's throat will crack the shell. Then the snake will spit out the pieces.

Rattlesnakes !!!!

Rattlesnakes live in many parts of North and South America. They shake bony rattles on their tails to make warning noises. A rattlesnake kills small animals with poison, then it swallows them whole. A diamond back rattlesnake is about 7 feet (2m) long!!!!!

 Green Tree Python!!!!

The green tree python stays with the eggs it laid until the young have hatched.

Safety Measures !!!!

Keep a posted list of emergency numbers in case of an accident. If possible have a phone installed in your snake room.

Never pick up (freehandle) a venomous snake with your bare hands.

Always keep cages and room door locked when not in immediate use, and never leave keys out or loan them. HIDE A SPARE SET!!!

  Snakebites

Snakes are naturally shy animals and only bites people if disturbed or trodden on by mistake. Thus, most snakebite is on the foot or lower leg, with a few on the arm and hand. The treatment of snakebites depends on whether the snake concerned was poisonous. A poisonous snakebite requires urgent medical attention. Poisonous snakes have hollow fangs through which they inject venom (poison) into the victim's body. The fangs may leave characteristic puncture in the skin. Often these marks are absent.

By comparison, a non-poisonous snake generally leaves only a group of surface bites, which in some cases appear to have a horseshoe shape. If the snake is non-poisonous, the area of the snakebite should simply be washed thoroughly with soap and water. But since it is not easy to tell a poisonous snakebite or not, urgent treatment should always be sought. If venomous been injected, the area around the bite is likely to swell within a few minutes of the attack. If swelling does not take place, it is probable that little venom has been injected and the patient should recover quickly. However, the patient should be kept under observation for at least 12 hours.
