The Muddy Rainstorm

Hi, I am Patricia and I am from north Mayo near Belmullet. I live in Gorthbrack and I am going to tell you about the mudslides in Glengad and Gorthbrack which are the main ones and Gorthmeila,Inver and Pullathomas, which are are not to bad.

I'll tell you about Glengad first. There are a lot of hills here so this is what was causing it.The mud it was awful, all the roads are destroyed because of the mud. I have never seen anything like it. The graveyard in Glengad is destroyed.About five coffions are swept away into the sea by the dreadful flood. In one place in Glengad there was lovely house and gates were covered in muck. It was disgraceful. Lots more happened in Glengad like Patrick  and his partner nearly got swept away and their car got swept away into the sea.

Gorthbrack, where I live, got a big shock because we never knew the bridge was going to collpse. It broke in half and it will take at least two months to repair it. There was a lanslide in Gorthbrack and in Glengad. The worst is the graveyard which is a total  disaster.

That night my dad and I were going to the pub in Pullathomas because my first cousin broke his leg so there was a quiz on to raise funds for him.
We had to wait in the car for half an hour because if we got out we would get soaking and the car was going back and over.

Gorthmeila, Inver and Pullathomas were not too bad but I'll can tell ya  thank God noone died. By the way my nextdoor neighbours were going over the Gorthbrack bridge when it collpsed  after they went over it. They were terrified. They could have died.
It was terrifing.

The Flood.

Hi my name is Sarah and I'm going to tell you about the big flood which destroyed a lot of bridges and a lot of roads in the north-west of Mayo. At nine o'clock on Friday the 19th of Septemeber 2003, it started lashing rain in Pullathomas. Not even an hour had passed when suddenly the Pollathomas bridge was flooded and no one could pass it. When my dad had left my brother to the pub in Inver he noticed that the bridge was beginning to become flooded. My brother could not get home for ages.
