The Finding of a Skeleton

We made an amazing discovery when on a nature walk recently. It was the skeleton of some unknown creature. Many of us hoped it was a prehistoric dinosaur. We took photographs of our find to the ecologist Cilian Roden, who visited our school last year. ( See the INTO heritage for schools page). Cilian wasn't too sure and he asked for some more detailed photographs, which we sent on. He declared that it was not a skeleton of a dinosaur, but that of a dolphin, which isn't as old as a dinosaur, but is quite rare.

We did some creative writing about the event and these are the stories we created.

One day in the summer holidays myself, Robert and Damien went on a nature walk to the sea side. When we got there I said that I wanted to go and look around for any washed up bones or any Colourful shells or rocks, Robert said that he would join me. Damien said he might go for a swim and that he would see us later. Robert and I went off looking. We found a few shells but nothing special. Then we came to this place where we saw a huge mammal. Neither of us knew what it was. Robert had a mobile phone and so did Damien so Robert rang him and told him to come quickly. When he came and saw the mammal he was amazed. He had never seen anything like it before either. Robert had a small camera with him so he took a few photos of it. We left the beach shortly after that and went home to show our parents the photos, They could not believe their eyes. The next morning we brought them to school and showed the teacher and the class the photos and they were astonished. A few days later a lot of people from Dublin and all over the country came to see it and they were amazed as well. THE END by Christopher

On Friday, the 21 of July 2001, in Antoret [Scotland], a huge group of bird skeletons were found by Colm Ducknor. "They were found in the woods at the edge of Antoret", says Colm Ducknor. "Half of the woods seemed to have been burnt down that was where the skeletons were found. It seems that the birds died in the fire". I asked Colm: "About how old would you say the skeletons are?" "I am not sure. My colleagues and I are looking in to it but I would guess about 700 years old, I will send word when I find out how old they are," he replied. An archaeological find An archaeological find has been made in Inver, where a man called Michael Barret has been digging a foundation for a house. The tail of a prehistoric monster was found where the foundation was being dug, the mouth however the head was right under the playground of Inver N.S. Children for eighty years or so have been running and playing over the open jaws of a tyrannosaurus rex. I interviewed Michael Barrett; he said, "I'm pleased to have helped the museum. I hope not to sound selfish but I would rather a roof over me my Wife and our children's heads." If you were in his shoes would you feel the same? We would like to hear readers opinions on this, send your comments to the editor. Your thoughts will be published in next weeks Western People. by Robbie

The Archaeological Find On a Friday afternoon two brothers were walking along the beach when they saw something gleam near the water edge. The finders discovered the Torcs and Bronze bracelets lying together and partially buried in sand. It is one of the most important prehistoric finds made in Ireland. The torcs from Dooyork range from 25cm to 30 in length and from 9gms to 12gms in weight. They are very small but exceptionally well made from thin narrow bands of Gold and are expertly trusted. The bracelets from Dooyork are made from thin bronze rod, oval in section and very slightly expanded at the ends. Dr. Patrick Wallace, Director of the National Museum of Ireland, said he was delighted that the first public showing of the hoard is in the county of its origin. By Sarah. The End.
