You Can Help!
On 23 October 1996 the Commissioners of Public Works applied to Clare County
Council for planning permission for an "entry point" at Mullaghmore (Gortlecka).
On 20 December 1996 the Clare County Council requested further information
(in the form of written questions) from the Commissioners in order to assist
them to reach a decision on the matter.
There are two ways you can help at the moment:

The following points have been raised by the Burren Action Group in
their objections:
-
Mullaghmore is one of the core areas of conservation importance in this
internationally renowned region.
-
Current practice in national parks internationally is to locate visitor
facilities in or near villages - not in sensitive core areas.
-
There has been no proper study of alternative sites.
-
Proposed road widening will further damage the character of the area.
-
There has been no consideration of the impacts of the proposed development
on Priority Habitats (as defined in the Habitats Directive) in the area
.

The following are areas which would, amongst others, be of interest
to us:
-
Recent cases of problems arising from the siting of visitor facilities
in sensitive core parts of protected areas.
-
Anything relating to visitor impacts on orchid rich limestone grassland,
limestone pavements and turlough margins.
-
Matters relating to current status of the Habitats Directive, particularly
with relation to failure of the Irish Government to transpose the Directive
and failure to submit the preliminary list of Sites of Community Importance.
Is there a measure of protection which can be called upon under the Directive?
