Cavan and Fermanagh have long been well-known as the Lakeland District, and for good reason. This part of Ireland, along side the border, is one of the best places to fish in Ireland. No matter where you are, you're never far from a lake, river or canal. The countries' two biggest rivers - the Shannon and the Erne - both flow through here and the newly restored Ballyconnell - Ballinamore Canal is well stocked with fish. It is said that there is a lake in Cavan for every day of the year so it makes sense to come to Ballyconnell if you're after a good time fishing. The Canal mentioned above flows right through the centre of the town and there is plenty of oppertune places to fish. The Erne, flowing through Belturbet is only ten minutes away and the Shannon is no further than a few minutes drive. Lakes are plentiful and the fishing is varied and successful. Try your hand at a wide range of fish: bream, roach, perch, rudd, trench and pike. Wild salmon, three types of trout - borwn, gillaroo and sonaghan - make their natural homes at Lough Melvin. Sea anglers are never far from the coast at Mullaghmore, Co. Sligo or Killybegs, Co. Donegal. If you come to Ballyconnell, you have to pay a vist to the Angler's Rest - one of the few bars in Ireland that is dedicated to helping fishermen. Run by Mr. Francis McGoldrick, one of Ireland's premier coarse fishermen and a man who knows the waters of Cavan like the back of his hand, there is no better place to be. Drop in in the evening for a pint after a hard days's fishing and enjoy the friendly, local atmosphere. Trade stories of successes or learn of the best places to fish - the local fishermen are only too glad to help. If you're planning on staying for a few days or a short holiday, the guest house is of excellent quality and you'll get a good nights sleep and a proper Irish breakfast in the morning.
