The border region of
Cavan and Fermanagh are world-famous for their
tourist attractions. Each year hundreds of people
come from all over Ireland and from the rest of
the world and despite that, it is always peaceful
here, always quiet. But Cavan's water draws not
only fishermen, it offers a wide range of
attractions. Below you can see just a small part
of the numerous fishing sites that are popular
around Ballyconnell. Below that you can see the
other attractions that make Cavan a place to
remember each year for those who depart. |

The newly restored
Shannon Erne Waterway is one of the principle
tourist locations in the area. It links the
Shannon and the Erne in the longest navigable
waterway in Europe. It is also well stocked with
bream, raoch, perch, rudd, trench and pike,
making it a fisherman's paradise. The many wiers
also mean there is fast-flowing water where you
can fish without being disturbed by the boats. |
| For the rest of you, the
canal's main attraction is in its winding passage
throught this beautiful part of the country.
Relax on a bout and take in the unspoilt scenery
and admire the wildlfe. Time means nothing to the
canal, everything is natural except the locks
which are now fully automated. Water sport also
dominate th canal, with canoeing through the
alternating still and rapid water creating an
adventure all of its own. There are many
locations around the cana where you can rent
watersport equipment. |

Perhaps one of the
better know attractions in Cavan is the modern
Slieve Russell Hotel, one of the mose beautiful
and well-equipped hotels in the region. Boasting
a swimming pool, 18-hole golf course, 9-hole golf
course, a sauna, a steam room,. a gym and a
driving range there is plenty to see and do at
the hotel. One unusual facility is the hotels
private Longranger helicopter which can be rented
out for tours or even for private use. |
| Cavan, with its rolling
hills and gentle drumlin landscape boasts a large
number of excellent golf courses dotted all over.
In addition to the two courses mentioned above,
there are also courses in Cavan, Belturbet and
many other places. |

The Cornmill Theatre, an
amatuer theatre based in Carigallen produces
plays which are known and well-regarded
throughout the country as being of a very
professional standard. Details about current
shows are postered in most towns. Well worth a
visit. |
| Cavan is steeped in
history, from the ancient Killycluggin stone at
Templeport to the Tomregan Stone in Ballyconnell,
but one of the better known attractions is the
Drumland Chruch and Round Tower in Miltown, only
a few minutes drive from Ballyconnell. This
ancient 14th century monastry is still in fairly
good condition and several excellent examples of
ancient carvings can still be seen. The Giant's
Grave has been restored at the Slieve Russel and
is said to bethe burial site or the great warrior
Conaill. |

Killikeen Forest Park is
the best place in Cavan to relax and get away
from it all. If you can to Ireland for a peaceful
holiday, there's nowhere better. |
| The Shannon, the longest
river in Ireland, has its humble beginnings in
the Cuilcagh mountains in Cavan. Here you can see
the water bubbling out of the ground as it makes
its way down the slopes of the mountains before
it meets any of its tributaries which contribute
to its size. |

| Annagh Lake,
Butlersbridge, is one of the favourite fishing
places in the county. In the 1960's the Inland
Fishery Trust used it as a trout fishery and it
is now owned by a local co-op. However, the IFT
still retain links with it and each year it is
restocked with over 5000 Rainbows, 2000
Summerlings and 5000 Fingerlings. The club there
will proivide you wil boats, tackle and anything
else you need. |
The newly opened Cavan
County Museum in Ballyjamesduff provides a great
insight into the life of the people of Cavan.
Other museums include St. Killian's Heritage
Centre, the Lifeforce Mill in Cavan and the
Carraig Craft Visitor Centre. |
