Carrick-on-Suir Castle

              Carrick is situated in three counties Waterford, Kilkenny and Tipperary.

• It is built on both banks of the Suir.
• There is a considerable trade up to this point.
• Carrick still has its mills creameries and mart days.
• In the fifteenth century Carrick was the most important place on the Suir after Waterford.
• In the fourteenth century Edmund Butler Earl of Ormonde who died in 1464 built a tower for himself on the banks of the Suir.
• It was a four sided edifice round a central courtyard .
• The front in castellated style faced the Waterford Mountains and commanded the view of the vale between Waterford and Clonmel.
• The castle overlooked and was protected by the Suir on the one side.

East Tower

• It was protected by its tall Edwardian towers which rise over the Elizabethan house.
• The Tudor house was added in more peaceful days for the Ormonds by the tenth Earl of Ormonde in 1565.
• This was Thomas Dubh "Black Tom" referred to as "the Queens Black Husband".

Black Tom

• The royal initials "ER" on the walls and their portraits in fresco assumed that Elizabeth’s favoured admired Thomas.

But "Black Tom" was "Dark" in more ways than one.

He kept his counsel and his eye on the winning side.

• The banqueting hall was last used on February 2^nd 1876 when 200 of the Ormonde tenants and retainers in the locality celebrated the marriage of the Marquis of Ormonde with Lady Elizabeth Grosvoner .
• This noble old house stands as a testimony to the wealth and glory of the Ormonde Butlers.
