Churchtown


Small late 18th or 19th century house of five bays and two storeys, with a three bay bow on the north front. William Disney was granted 1,552 acres in the area in 1666. His great-great-grandson Eccles was there in 1737.

Eccles grandson, Major General Sir Moore Disney had a distinguished career in the Peninsular war and died in 1848. The Churchtown estate of 2,933 acres was sold in the Incumbered Estates court in 1852 Pigots Directory 1824 lists John Power of Churchtown. In 1839 he is listed as a magistrate.
