
Tybroughney Castle
Formerly river Suir was fordable at Tybroughney; and to defend the passage across the river and keep back the Munstermen, Prince John, afterwards king of England, on his landing in Ireland in 1185, set this castle here.
Donald O'Brien, King of Limerick led on his brave soldiers to Tybroughney, and under the very walls of the castle defeated the English with great slaughter.
The present castle of Tybroughney is that commenced by Prince John.
In 1653 it was handed over by Cromwell to Sir Algernon May.
The patron saint of Tybroughney is St. Modhomhnac is thought to have introduced bees to Ireland.
At a low tide, from the top of the castle, in the center of the of the river Suir, at the mouth of the Lingawn fiver, can be seen a "Great Stone ".
This rock is a meeting point of three counties Tipperary, Waterford and Kilkenny.
