Inauguration of President Mary McAleese

Not even the birds were up as 20 students and 2 teachers (Mr Morrissey and Mrs Skehan) made their way to Cashel community school on the cold, dark morning of Thursday 11th Nov. It was the day President McAleese was to be inaugurated for her 2nd term in office and Cashel Community School had the privilege of representing Tipperary at this important event. At the early hour of 6.30 the bus departed. As the sun began to rise so did the sleeping beauties on the bus and things began to liven up. Students were only arriving in school as the bus hit the heavy gridlock of Dublin city traffic. On arriving at Cathal Brugha we were stopped at a security check point. A soldier than board our bus and we were escorted to a double Decker bus. From there we got a Garda escort to Dublin castle and we watched eagerly as we caused mayhem in city centre Dublin. We arrived 2hrs before the inauguration and took up prime poisons around the barriers. The woman of the day, i.e. Ashley Ryan and not President Mary McAleese, Kept us on our toes. She, with the help of Andrea Hayde and Sinead O’Connor did many televisions, radio and newspaper interviews with people such as Brian Crowley and Fergal Keane replied “fair sound” and this was broadcast on live radio later that evening. Finally after a lot of waiting President McAleese and her family arrived. She waved to the crowd in the courtyard and disappeared into Dublin castle to be officially inaugurated as President of Ireland. We watched the ceremony on the big screen and finally our president emerged after an inspirational speech. She met each student individually and it was really an honour to witness such an event. As the president departed we all nearly ran back to the buses because we were weak with the hunger. Luckily we were faced with mountains + mountains of delicious food. After our bellies were full we slowly made our way back to Cashel Community School. It was a memorable day and it certainly will go down in the history of the school.
