Neantóga/Nettle

A dock leaf cures a nettle sting.

Is leigheas an duilleog copóige ar chealg ó neantóg. Má tá airtríteas ort deirtear má théann tú ag rolla i neantóga go leigheasfar thú.

For athritis it is said that rolling in stinging nettles will cure you. THE tops of young nettle plants were boiled like spinach or cabbage and that "purified the blood" to cure boils etc ! For a sore throat nettles are boiled and strained and the water in which they were boiled is used as a gargle.Nettles are a good source of iron,especially young nettles

The milk of the dandelion cures warts. The dandelion is good for a bad stomach.It should be pulled early in the morning cut up fine and made ito a drink like tea.It should be drunk before breakfast.Dandelion juice is good for a weak heart.

. On saint Brigid's Eve people put a pile of rushes on their doorstep.The tradition is that Saint Brigid will bless them as she travels around the country.These blessed rushes will cure sick animals.

Slán-lus-the ribwort will stop cuts.You must grind up the stem in your mouth first.

A drink made from the roots of primose will relieve asthma.

Boiled marshmallow is a good poultice for sprains.

Boiled ivy leaves are good for corns.

Garlic cures colds. Cabbage water is a cure for arthritis.

If you have a sore throat,put barley in your sock and wrap it around your throat.

The puffball mushroom will stop a cut from bleeding.It used to be used to polish shoes too.

An onion boiled in milk with a shake of pepper in it for a cold on the chest. Chew a piece of silver birch bark to cure a headache, is a natural source of (asprin), it tastes awful but works. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

. Cobwebs stop bleeding.There is a line in "A Midsummer nights Dream", "I shall desire more of your acquaintenance,Good master Cobweb.If I cut my finger I shall make bold with you."

Slime of a snail is a wart-cure.

A "blue bag" cures a wasp sting.

. There was a cure for worms in calves called "cleas na bpéist".The farmer tied nine knots on a piece of string.He opened the knots one-by-one hitting the calf on the back each time with the piece of string.There may have been a special prayer to say but we haven't been able to find what it was.

The stable where Fr. John Murphy (the 1798 leader) spent his last night before capture is supposed to have a cure for sick animals.Any sick animal spending a night there will be cured.This farm belonged to Kepples in Ballyveale,near Ballon

.People say you can still see the shadow on the wall of the building in the square in Tullow,where his head was put on a spike.

A dash of vinegar in the final rinsing water after hair washing to prevent the hair becoming too greasy. Lemon juice to whiten hands and elbows.

If you get a stitch when running,bend down pick up the nearest stone,spit on it and throw it over your head.

For a sore throat ;wrap a sock filled with hot salt around the neck. For boils :place over the boil a piece of bread soaked in very hot water to draw the boil.

A child with the whooping cough should be passed over and under a donkey nine times to be cured.If a child is given milk that the ferret has left it will cure them too.

"Clochaphoill",the holed stone outside Tullow also cured children if they were passed through the hole a certain number of times.

If you have bad feet it is very good to walk barefoot in the early morning dew. Cold tea will cure a stye in your eye. A dog's lick will cure a burn. Bread soda -sodium bicarbonate in a bath for a rash -still works.

Warts.

There is a "wart well" in Kildreenagh,near Bagnelstown. Water from the forge was another cure for warts. There is a wart-stone in the chirch yard of the cathedral of Old Leighlin.If you dip your wart into the water in the stone it will be cured.

For warts, put a piece of banana skin (yellow side out) on it overnight it a few times. Some also say that unripe bananas work best. If you found a white stone you rubbed it against the wart.You wrapped the stone up,usually in a sweet -paper.The next person to pick up the stone got your wart intead.

If you have a wart rub it with a piece of meat,then bury the meat.As the meat rots away your wart will rot away too. St John's wort cures warts.
