It's good to see that one of our oldest and most respected organisations like the Pioneers is still active in all of our towns. It is encouraging to see that people can still enjoy a wedding, birthday party or a football match without resorting to alcohol and their enjoyment is just as full as others at the same event. Another observation that is good to note is the number of young people who are Pioneers and like their elders they are happy and proud to be part of such a great organisation. They are all to be admired for their efforts and as there are as many vacancies this means that new members are always welcome. Life can be lived to the full by a Pioneer so give it a thought and join up if interested.

Connaught Provincial Activities Committee A.G.M. 2004

The Annual General Meeting of the Connaught Provincial Activities Committee was held on 13th September in the Rest and Care Centre, Knock.

Meetings were held every month from September 2003 to June 2004. Connaught Young Pioneers met on the same nights on four occasions and joined our meeting after their own business was finished. The Leisure Sub-Committees met in October and November 2003 and again in January, February, March and May 2004. Réadóirí and Quiz Competitions were organised and run very efficiently by the Sub-Committees. The spiritual exercises, organised by Connaught for the year were very well attended and included:
  • The Annual Mini-Vigil on Friday 26th September 2003 in the Apparition Church in Knock;
  • The afternoon of prayer and reflection in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, Knock on Sunday 4th April 2004;
  • Some 165 pilgrims led by Fr. Joseph Delaney went to Lourdes from 21st - 26th July 2004;
  • Mass was celebrated at the January meeting and again at the June meeting.
The Connaught Essay Competition titles were circulated at the January meeting. The presentation of prizes were held in Knock on Thursday 6th May 2004.

The National Ball was held in the Downhill Hotel, Ballina, on Saturday 20th March 2004. Great co-operation between the Connaught Youth Pioneer Committee, the Mid-Killala Region, Ballina Centre and the Connaught Provincial Activities Committee ensured a very enjoyable night.

The Senior Seminar was held in Knock in November 2004 and was very successful.

Sports Competitions ~ Clonfert Diocese hosted the Gaelic Football Connaught Finals very efficiently on Saturday 15th May 2004. Claremorris Region hosted the Basketball and Badminton Finals on Saturday 22nd May 2004. The Soccer Finals were held on September 4th 2004 in Castlebar. All went well.

A joint meeting of the Connaught Provincial Activities Committee and the Connaught Youth Committee and Regional representatives, aged from sixteen to thirty years of age has been planned for Knock in the coming months. The aim is to hear from the young people themselves, how best we could address the problems associated with alcohol and other abuse.

The Annual Mini-Vigil will be held in the Apparition Church on Friday, 24th September 2004.

The following are the elected officers for the coming year.
