The Annual General Meeting of the Connaught
Provincial Activities
Committee was held on 13th September in the Rest and Care Centre,
Knock.
Meetings were held every month from September 2003 to June 2004.
Connaught Young Pioneers met on the same nights on four occasions and
joined our meeting after their own business was finished. The Leisure
Sub-Committees met in October
and November 2003 and again in January, February, March and May 2004.
Réadóirí
and Quiz Competitions were organised and run very efficiently by the
Sub-Committees.
The spiritual exercises, organised by Connaught for the year were very
well
attended and included:
- The Annual Mini-Vigil on Friday 26th September 2003 in the
Apparition Church in Knock;
- The afternoon of prayer and reflection in the Blessed Sacrament
Chapel, Knock on Sunday 4th April 2004;
- Some 165 pilgrims led by Fr. Joseph Delaney went to Lourdes from
21st - 26th July 2004;
- Mass was celebrated at the January meeting and again at the June
meeting.
The
Connaught
Essay Competition titles were circulated at the January
meeting. The presentation of prizes were held in Knock on Thursday 6th
May 2004.
The
National
Ball
was held in the Downhill Hotel, Ballina, on Saturday 20th March 2004.
Great
co-operation between the Connaught Youth Pioneer Committee, the
Mid-Killala
Region, Ballina Centre and the Connaught Provincial Activities
Committee
ensured a very enjoyable night.
The
Senior
Seminar was held in Knock in November 2004 and was very
successful.
Sports
Competitions ~ Clonfert Diocese hosted the Gaelic
Football Connaught Finals very efficiently on Saturday 15th May 2004.
Claremorris Region
hosted the Basketball and Badminton Finals on Saturday 22nd May 2004.
The
Soccer Finals were held on September 4th 2004 in Castlebar. All went
well.
A joint meeting of the Connaught Provincial Activities Committee and
the Connaught Youth Committee and Regional representatives, aged from
sixteen to thirty years of age has been planned for Knock in the coming
months. The aim is to hear from the young people themselves, how best
we could address the problems associated with alcohol and other abuse.
The Annual Mini-Vigil will be held in the Apparition Church on Friday,
24th September 2004.
The following are the elected officers for the coming year.
Members of the Connacht Council of the P.T.A.A. gathered recently for
their annual general meeting in St. Johns Rest and Care Centre in
Knock. Delegates from all the regions were in attendance and they
reviewed a highly successful year for the Association.
*The annual trip to Lourdes was held in July and the pilgrimage was led
by
Fr. Joe Delaney who was on his 70th
trip to Lourdes.
*The Association held their annual Retreat in Knock on Palm Sunday.
*The seminar for primary school pupils attracted a crowd of around
1,600 to Knock. This was held on the 18th April and got underway with
prayers by
Fr. Micheal Mannion and
Fr. Micheal MacGreail. The speakers included
Sgt. Justin Clarke (Garda Drugs Squad) and Gda. Michael Fahy (Juvenile
Liaison Officer for South Mayo), some young pioneers from St. Colmans
College and Mount St.
Michael,
Anne Mulkeen,
Ray O'Connor,
Padraig
Brady and
Fr. Joe Delaney.
*The Connacht region also enjoyed success in various activities
including sports, essays and the Gradam awards.

Frain extended their thanks to the officers and delegates for
their work and dedication throughout the year. Further thanks was
extended to the delegates who attended the National Leisure meetings,
Central Council, Board of Management and Youth Committee meetings.
*Glowing tributes were paid to
Theresa Mulkeen
for her work with the Young Pioneers in Mount St. Michael Secondary
School in Claremorris and also to her sister
Anne
Mulkeen for her similar work with the students in St. Colmans
College.

Mary McGovern (Robeen) joined in the
words of thanks to
Denis Mulkeen and also
to
Theresa and Anne Mulkeen for their
contribution to the Young Pioneers and for organising the very
successful Connaught and All-Ireland Sports. She also extended thanks
to Michael Commins, Billy Horan and Joe Redmond for their press
coverage and Monica Morley and Mid-West Radio for their support for the
Pioneer Association.
*Special tributes were paid to
Sr. Colombiere
Collins who died in recent months and who was a stalwart member
of the Association for many years and who did great work with the young
pioneers in Mount St. Michael. Peace to her gentle soul.
