SIAB Schools’ Track & Field International

19^th July 2003 Leckwith Stadium, Cardiff

This time we were in Leckwith Stadium, Cardiff for the annual four home countries schools’ international. Once again the young athletes performed with distinction in blustery conditions, with a very strong wind against the athletes in the home straight.

We had a weakened team with many of those selected withdrawing due to the clash of fixtures with the AAI Juvenile Championships and a team meeting for the athletes going to the EYOD event later in the month. Nevertheless, we had some excellent performances with many of the athletes producing personal bests on the day. In the 3000m Ciara Durkin took an astonishing 33 seconds off her pb when she ran 10.06.77. She split the two English girls in running a very courageous race. In the High Jump David Shields also produced a new pb when coming second to Tim Maitland of England in 1.95m. Kathleen Fitzgerald was another to produce a pb when she threw the shot 11.53m and took second place.

Once again we had good performances from our walkers with Laura Reynolds and Joseph Durcan taking creditable second places.

Other notable performances came from Cathal Dennehy in the 1500m Steeplechase, James Nagle in the Hammer, Paul Marry in the Javelin, Christopher Dalton in the Walk, and Ann Marie Cronin in the Hammer.

Overall Ireland finished third in the match result. The point’s totals were as follows:
