connections to the Global Crossing ACI and II cables between Europe and
the USA - including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, Washington DC,
Chicago and Boston. In May 2001, the Government announced additional
direct fiber capacity to Tokyo and Hong Kong with plans for direct links
to Singapore and points in Latin America in the pipeline.
The cable system is duplicated for redundancy
with two separate Irish landing points at Ballinesker & Killmore Quay (WX).
The cables contains 12 fiber pairs, each with an initial capacity of 25
gigabits/sec.
360Networks launch 2 Terabits/sec link to North America
On September 25, 2000 the Irish cable landing station was opened for
a second major new ultra high capacity 5,600 km cable linking
Ireland with North America. The 360Atlantic cable is

North America and

terabits per second, and can support 10 gigabits per second data
transfer rates on a single channel. Combined with the Global
Crossing cable system, the 360Atlantic (and their respective links
between Ireland and the rest of Europe) provides triple redundancy of
the communications pipelines for Irish internet sites. The 360Networks
cable system will link over 100 major cities by June 2002.
"Ireland will soon be an important gateway between Europe and our
networks in North America, South America and Asia," said Mr Ashwin
