Above: Kinsale (CK), 30 kms from Cork city. Kinsale is the oldest town in Ireland
and is known as the gourmet capital of the country. It is one of the major sailing bases
in the Cork area.
Below: Cobh (pronounced "Cove"), a fishing port built on an island in Cork Harbour. It is accessible
by road bridge, suburban rail from Cork City (26kms) and by ferry. Cobh is famous for its cathedral
and commanding views of Cork Harbour. "The Queenstown story" is a heritage exhibition situated
in the railway station and depicts emigration to North America by sea, much of which went through
the port of Cobh. The boat shown is an Irish Ferries car ferry which sails between Cork Port
(situated at Ringaskiddy) and the French ports of Roscoff and Cherbourg. The oldest yacht club
in the world (The Royal Cork Yacht Club) used to be headquartered in Cobh. It is now based
in Crosshaven, at the other side of the harbour. It is well worth visiting The Fota Wildlife Park
on one's way to Cobh. The park is situated on a neighbouring island, which is on the same rail and road route as Cobh.
Fota Island also has a tropical arboretum and a golf club.
