Sun. 11th. March, 2001

For the purposes of my demonstation of ICT in the School I went to Edhelper's Home Page at http://www.edhelper.com/. This is an excellent site for resources and lesson plans for Teachers in many Subject areas with good links to other Resource Pages.

However, due to the lack of suitable software in my own field (Economics and Accounting) I chose to explore the area of Music. A significant number of the students in our school take at least one musical instrument and there are four full-time Music Teachers on the Staff in addition to many others in St. Angela's Music Academy attached to the School.

I have often observed my Music Colleagues toil over the laborious transcribing of musical notation and I wondered whether or not any Program existed to help the productivity of my Colleagues.

I, therefore, set out for myself the following Brief:

  1. The program must be small and functional

  2. It must be capable of authoring music in the usual Treble/Clef notation format

  3. It should also have the capacity to print the results

  4. The possibility of trying out various instrumental arrangements should also be possible

  5. It should be capable also of playing and displaying the notation of any Midi file - a very small music file with definite limitations but also with reasonable quality.

I next found the Noteworthy Composer Program on the Edhelper site and continue to experiment with it. It comes the nearest to the Brief I set myself.

You can download it from the Edhelper Page or here from my own site in Zip format. (The Zip file is 0.75 Mb in size and is Shareware. It should download in 3 minutes at 56kps)

There are tons of sites out there with Midi files. I have provided a few links on the Navigation Bar above.

This Program will not satisfy the Music Purists among you!
