The Unveiling of Bohdan Piasecki’s ‘The Last Supper’
Claire Carey

The date for the unveiling of Bohdan Piasecki’s painting ‘The Last Supper’ was Saturday, November 21st. 1998 at the Irish School of Ecumenics, Milltown Park. The invitation read 2.30 p.m., but the members of the Core Group were there from about 1.00 p.m. By the time I arrived, the finger food, snacks and drinks were already prepared; so we began moving the furniture to make the foyer more accessible for the expected crowd. The hanging of the painting proved to be the most difficult task, as we had no ladder available. However, Colm and Diarmuid devised a solution by placing a chair on top of a table, and Colm bravely climbed up and hung the painting.

By 3.00 p.m., the foyer was full of people, about 70 altogether, and Colm called on Dr. Gesa Thiessen to unveil the painting. Dr. Thiessen gave a fascinating talk, full of insights into the style and technique used by the artist; and the listeners expressed their appreciation with loud applause. The general feeling was one of interest in the project and there was a great atmosphere of excitement and encouragement throughout the afternoon.

There was also a lot of interest in the prints of the painting and many were sold, thus spreading the word on the project. It was a very enjoyable occasion. If you are in the Milltown campus, please make the effort to view the painting, which is still in the foyer of the Irish School of Ecumenics - it is well worth the visit.
