Welcome to Effin National School's web site! We are a primary school near Kilmallock Co. Limerick in Ireland. Click on the buttons on the left to follow the links to other pages in our Website.

The present Effin National School was opened in 1941. It is a three teacher Rural School in south County Limerick. There are 71 Pupils on the Roll. Effin is five miles from Kilmallock, our nearest county town, and five miles from Charleville in Co.Cork. It is approximately 30 Minutes travel to Limerick Northwards and 50 Minutes travel to Cork Southwards. Our Parish lies in the heart of the Golden Vale, Munster's rich dairyland. Intensive dairying is carried on here. The Ballyhoura Hills which separate Limerick from Cork are at the Southern end of our Parish.

Staker Wallis was hanged in Kilfinane, Co. Limerick in 1798. He is well remembered in his native district and the story of his fate is well known. But further afield he is little known of, except by traditional pipers and violinists, andly lamenting air "The Death of Staker Wallis." Read more about the life of Staker Wallace here

Effin is part in the Barony if Coshma and part in the Barony of Coshlea. Coshma (by the Maigue) and Coshlea ( by the Mountain) indicates fertile land bounded by the Ballyhoura Hills. Read more about the parish of Effin here!

The School Crest

We have a new Crest for our school now. It has been specially designed for our school. Mr. Karl Leahy of Club Crest, Shannon, put a lot of work into this crest. The teachers gave him certain guidelines. He did a splendid job for us. The crest is specially stitched onto your uniform.

What's on our school Crest?

There are two parts to the crest -the Shield and the Banner. Both are enclosed with a red border. This represents our handiwork. There are six different items within the Shield. At the base we have depicted the beautiful view from the rear of the school, namely, The Ballyhoura Hills. These are the highest hills in Ireland! They represent nature. Above these we have two scholastic items; a book and a quill. The book is opened to indicate learning. On it are written the first and last letter of the Greek Alphabet, Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. In bygone days people wrote with a quill. Eimhín, the name of our parish and school, is at the top of the shield. Our parish is named after Naomh Eimhín, and we decided to use "Eimhín" in our crest rather than the more recent "Eifinn. Our school was opened in 1940. We have no records to indicate when the old school opened. The navy blue background indicates the colour of our uniform. The Banner bears the name of our school. It is written in gold.

Cad tá ar an Armas?

Tá dhá chuid san armas; An Sciath Armais agus an Bratach Meirge. Táid araon taobh istigh de theorainn dearg. Léiríonn sé seo lorg ár lámha. Tá sé mhír difriúil sa Sciath. Sa bhonn tá Sléibhte Abhrait, radharc álainn amach ó chúl na scoile. Siad seo na sléibhte is airde in Éirinn. Samhlaíonn said seo an nádúr. Taobh thuas de na sléibhte tá dhá airteagal an léinn; leabhar agus cleite. Tá an leabhar ar oscailt ag léiriú an fhoghlaim. Tá dhá litir ón aibítir ngréagach; Alpha agus Omega. Siad san an chéad litir is an litir deireanach san aibítir sin. Cialaíonn said 'an tús is an críoch'. San t-seanreacht, scríobh daoine le cleite gé. Ar mhullach an scíth, tá ainm an pharóiste is na scoile, Eimhín. Thug Naomh Eimhín a ainm don pharóiste agus shochraíomar 'Eimhín' a úsáid in ionad an litriú nua-aimsire 'Eifinn'. Is sa bhliain 1940 a d'oscail ár scoil. Níl cúntas again cathain a d'oscail an sean-scoil. Cialaíonn dubhghorm an chúlra dath chulaith na scoile. Iompraíonn an Bratach ainm na scoile. Tá sé scríofa ar ór-dhath.
