Under-21’s got back to winning ways in the League last
Sunday morning, with a comprehensive 4 – 1 win over
Mullingar Athletic.
Town took the lead just before the break, when Mark Sherlock
headed home from close range following a cross from Keith
O’Reilly on the left.
Brian McCarthy made it 2 – 0 on 51 minutes, when he
got the slightest of touches on Dave O’Brien’s
cross to take it round the ‘keeper and into the back
of the net.
Anthony Hayes was taken down in the box on 65 minutes, and
Carmine Russo stepped up to despatch the resultant penalty
kick to the bottom left hand corner to make it 3 – 0.
The visitors immediately made it 3 – 1 when a simple
ball over the top caught Town napping at the back. Mullingar
almost made it 3 – 2 a minute later when their No. 10
saw his shot on the turn go just wide.
Colm Muldoon and Joe Dunne’s side wrapped things up
on the stroke of full time after a good run from Niall Scullion
down the right ended in the centre half crossing to Russo
whose shot took a deflection past the Mullingar ‘keeper.
Amazingly, the side won’t have another home game until
October 1st when they welcome Salthill Devon to Saint Mel’s
Park. Next up is an Enda McGuill Under-21 League Cup this
weekend away to Kildare County.
