| ATHLONE TOWN Under-21's
bagged themselves another win on Tuesday evening of last week,
when they beat Salthill Devon 2 - 0 in St. Mel's Park.
The visitors never really got going, and Town managed to
create a number of good chances in the early stages. After
two good chances from Istvan Lakatos and Mark Sherlock respectively,
Carmine Russo curled a free around the wall on 21 minutes,
forcing the keeper to palm the ball around the post.
Town took the lead three mintues later, in an almost exact
replica of their senior's goal in the FAI Cup. A hand ball
on the right wing saw Anthony Hayes swing in the free, and
Brian McCarthy's head met the ball at the back post, having
enough time to pick his spot.
Town wrapped things up with eight minutes remaining. Deccie
Fallon sent a thumping volley to the back of the net, crashing
it in off the inside of the post with the 'keeper confidently
waving it wide!
This was a good win for Athlone, with Salthill battling it
out at the top of the table with Kildare County for most of
the season. The three points put Athlone back on top of Mayo
League, and into one of the top four qualifying spots for
the League knock-out stages.
Athlone are back in action on Monday evening next when they
make the short trip to take on Mullingar Athletic at Gainstown.
Kick-off is at 8:00pm.
