Embalming involves the injection of specially prepared fluids into the arterial system, which travels throughout the arterial system, preserving the tissues, while simultaneously returning a natural color, this is achieved by the dye's added to the fluids, the dye has two purposes, to let the embalmer know where the fluid has gone, and more important where it has not gone, and to produce a natural color to the Deceased, which is most important in presenting the Deceased. The embalming process is usually carried out in a specially prepared premises, such as that shown above. The embalming process takes an average of two hours, longer if there is complications, such as restoration of the facial tissues, which is very time consuming.
Edward,(Myself) Grey's Embalmer is very highly qualified to international standards. I studied Embalming in Doggart's College of Funeral Directing and Embalming in Northern Ireland, Qualifying to the British Institute of Embalmers Degree, Restorative Art in the International College of Mortuary Science, Liege, Belgium, Receiving My Masters Degree in Restorative Art, Diploma in Cosmetology in Meredith International College, London, and Diploma in Hairdressing in Skolar's College Limerick in Ireland. I always ensure the Deceased is presented in the most natural form, and listen carefully to the Families instructions in order to ensure the optimum results are achieved, Families often offer a picture to help in presentation of the Deceased, which is particularly helpful.
Presentation of the Deceased is the utmost most important item, in presenting a proper Funeral Service, it is proven that viewing of the Deceased is of utmost importance to help a Family begin there grieving process, and to have a Deceased presented properly helps the family, and makes them feel proud as Relatives and Friends visit the Funeral Home or Private Residence. Bereaved Families are relieved to see there closes and dearest reposing looking natural and pleasant and without any sign of pain or distress, this is a picture they will carry with them for the rest of there lives, they will remember the Deceased and how they looked in the Funeral Home, and if there is a bad experience during the Funeral, they will never forget it, or the Funeral Director that let it happen. This is why it is important to have the Deceased properly embalmed, which presents any process happening that would cause any embarrassment to the Family, who are the most important People at the Funeral, and also the Funeral Director, who will not only be embarrassed, but whose reputation will be damaged in a way He/She can never repair, however this is far more important to focus on the embarrassment to the Bereaved, which will be far more damaging, as they will remember this embarrassing moment, each and every time they think of the Deceased, which is not a nice memory of anyone.
The Funeral Home and lighting also have to be considered when trying to present the Deceased in the most natural and pleasant environment. Funeral Home's have been traditionally dark and cold, however most modern built Funeral Home's, are brightly lit and warm, which immediately upon entering the Funeral Home, make a Bereaved family feel comfortable, even though they are in a strange environment, under strange conditions. But Lighting of the deceased is the area, I feel I need to discuss. We have used an American system, by which We have three colored light's over the Deceased, each one on an individual dimmer, the colors are Red, Blue and Green, the three primary colors, by mixing these three colors, We are able to control the color of the Deceased to produce the most natural and pleasant effect. In some cases, this system proves invaluable, especially where there are inappropriate color present in the Deceased, the colored light's help to camouflage this discoloration, and present the Deceased with a more natural complexion.
Even in everyday presentation of the Deceased, this system proves to be essential in presenting the Deceased, the light's definitely present the Deceased with a lovely complexion, they are only turned very light, however there effect is irreplaceable, and most effective, and We sometimes only miss them when We have a Deceased in a Private Residence, and when We remove the Deceased to the Funeral Home for the final removal, it is then that the Family realize the effect of these light's, realizing the difference in presentation, between the Private Residence and the Funeral Home. This is a system that I found in Funeral Home's in America, and it certainly works for Us, it is not the most important thing in presenting the Deceased, the embalming is number one, however these light's are definitely the finishing touch, and a most valuable touch, everything that helps present the Deceased in a natural form is worth it,at least as far as We are concerned.
