What is Holistic Massage?

The treatment of certain ailments by rubbing or stroking the affected part is a practice found in almost all societies from the beginning of recorded time. In the early 1800's Per Henrick Ling, drawing on his knowledge of techniques used in China and elsewhere, developed Swedish massage. His technique quickly established itself in institutes and spas all over Europe.

Holistic Massage is a variant of Ling's technique - adapted to the needs of modern stressful life. By treating the whole person it aims to relax the muscles, calm the emotions, improve the circulation, recharge the body's immune system, refresh the spirit, balance the life forces and, thus, heal the patient's "dis-ease".

This is achieved by the use of relaxation techniques, the playing of calming music, the employment, where necessary, of essential oils, and, most importantly, listening carefully to the client and attending to his or her needs in a holistic manner.

Since there is no licensing system in Ireland, anyone may practice holistic massage. Short courses may be taken which will enable you to practise on family or friends.

However, most serious practitioners will have followed a longer approved course in anatomy, physiology and massage, and will have passed a recognized examination set by an international body such as the International Therapy Examination Council (ITEC).

There are a number of centres in Dublin and the provinces which provide tuition and training to the ITEC standard.

Many practitioners will have further qualifications, such as:

Aromatherapy (the use of essential oils for therapeutic purposes) and/or the fascinating science of

Reflexology (the application of pressure techniques to extremities, such as the feet or the hands, so as to influence functioning of the whole body).

Manual Lymphatic Drainage - The Dr. Vodder Method (a special technique designed to stimulate and increase the lymphatic circulation and thus to strengthen the body's natural defences against disease.

The Irish Massage Therapist Association (IMTA) is a national grouping of massage therapists dedicated to the promotion of massage as a valued therapy and to the encouragement of a high standard of professional practice.

The Strokes of Holistic Massage

The various strokes used in massage are carefully designed to

achieve the complete relaxation of the body muscles,

increase both blood and lymphatic circulation

help eliminate waste products that build up in our muscles as a result of normal metabolism.

A massage always begins with a series of long slow movements over the area to be treated using the open palms. This movement warms up the muscles and spreads the massage oil evenly over the limb.

The same movements are repeated at the end of the session with the aim of calming the subject and leaving him or her with a pleasant, even euphoric, sensation.

Following the slow movements - other strokes are used such as:-

 lifting,

 rolling,

 thumb pressure,

 kneading with both palms,

 cupping and

 hacking.

Each is designed with a specific objective in mind.

Finally, as mentioned above, the long slow movements are once more applied.

A full-body treatment lasts an hour or more. Benefit can also be obtained from treating individual parts of the body, e.g., the back or the neck.
