Press Release

Irish Abroad vote for Mc Aleese

Emigrants have voted by a clear majority in favour of Mary Mc Aleese as their new President in the online Presidential election. As promised, Glor an Deorai have published their results of their online election well before the official results. Over 700 people visited the website over the past two weeks (http://www.iol.ie/~gad/welcome.htm), with many participating in the voting experiment which was restricted to Irish emigrants. As expected there were spoilt votes, what surprised us was that the majority of these came from within Ireland, and took the form of multiple voting. Overall we are delighted at the attitude of the Irish abroad and their  healthy participation is to be commended.

Emigrants from the UK, US, Europe, Canada and Australia participated, there were even voters from such far flung locations as Guatemala. The majority (37.40%) came from the US, with 35.20% coming from the UK.

Mc Aleese 38.44%
Banotti 29.64%
Roche 15.96%
Scallon 13.68%
Nally 2.28%

Commented Dave Reynolds of Glor an Deorai "We’re delighted with the way the election went, it proves our theory that it’s possible for the Irish abroad to participate in Irish elections via the internet, all that’s required from the Irish government is the willpower, something that all political parties seem to lack once they achieve power."

It will be interesting to see how the emigrant results tally with the official results.
