Photographs from 1973

Main Street 1

Old C of I School

We see the old Church of Ireland Primary School, built in 1876 and still in use when this photograph was taken.
Beyond the school we see the house of the late George Blair who for many years drove hackney car for the people of Killeshandra. This house has been demolished.

Main Street 2

Some Old Shop Fronts

This photograph is interesting because it shows the old style shop fronts then to be seen on Tom O'Reilly's public house and on Brady's shop. The three storey building was The Royal Hotel.

Main Street 3

The Institute Hall

Looking down Main St towards the Bank and the Creamery we see, on the left, the old Intitute Hall. Founded in 1906 as an Insitute to help educate young girls, in later years it became the town cinema, theatre and community hall. It was destroyed by fire in 1983.

The Cottages in Church Street

To left of centre we see four cottages all of which have now been demolished to make way for a car park for employees of Lakeland Co-op.
The building adjoining them, then Fletcher's Office, is now a canteen for the Co-op.
