SSC Cadet Section

Skerries has one of the most active junior sections in the country and club cadets regularly earn places on international youth sailing teams. Two popular classes, Optimists and Mirrors are sailed. Cadets regularly represent their club at events elsewhere in Ireland and abroad.

Training

Annual courses prepare members for all grades offered by the Irish Sailing Association. The 2000 course commences on July 3 and runs until August 4 inclusive with a one week break for the Fireball Europeans which take place between July 8 and 14. Beginners, from the age of about 10 years, are catered for at introductory sessions on Thursday nights. Skerries SC, in conjunction with Malahide SC and Howth YC organises advanced training for Optimist sailors during the winter months. The section is developing an intensive coaching programme to provide inexpensive training at all levels on a continuous basis.

Racing takes place on Saturday mornings (Optimists), Saturday afternoons (Mirrors) and on Wednesday nights (all classes).

How to Join

Cadet membership is competitively priced at £20 a year (£30 for children of non-members) or can be included in a family membership. Parents of cadets are not required to be members although they will receive every encouragement to avail of all the benefits of associate, full or family membership. Parents are also encouraged to participate in the running of the junior section and to help in the management of races and other events. Help is especially required at the annual regatta or when the club hosts regional or national events.
