Elections to the National Board

Having set up the structure of the Council at local level the Establishment Group set about putting the National Board of the Interim Council in place.

The National Board has 28 members as follows:

Election/selection to the National Board of the Council took place at 4 regional Conferences around the country during November/December 1996. The conferences were held in Dublin, Cork, Sligo and Kildare. Elected representatives from each County Network were invited to attend these regional Conferences.

Election of Individual Representatives
Individuals standing for election in Panel A made a short presentation and voting took place at each regional Conference. Unfortunately, bad weather in Sligo halted proceedings and a postal vote followed shortly afterwards.

Selection of Group Representatives
Representatives of Parents/Carers. groups and local groups of people with disabilities were selected by agreement among themselves at each of the conferences. A total of 4 local Parents Groups and 4 local groups of people with disabilities were selected to the Board in this manner. (one group from each category from each regional conference). These groups represent all groups affiliated to the Council.

Two advocates have been appointed to the National Board. These advocates have been carefully selected by the Establishment Group to represent the most vulnerable members of the Council - those who by the nature of their disability cannot represent their own needs or speak for themselves. The advocates selected will specifically represent those with a severe learning disability and those with profound mental health difficulties.

Many people around the country applied to the Establishment Group for the position of Citizen Advocate at local level. Their commitment and concern for those needing representation was very evident at the screening workshops carried out as part of the selection process. Those selected at County Network level showed a strong desire to speak out on behalf of those who cannot represent themselves and are now actively part of the County Network structure.
