The 1998 Irish Chess Championships were held in the Teachers' Club, 36 Parnell Square, Dublin from Saturday the 11th to Sunday the 19th July 1998 inclusive. A total of 124 entries to four different sections were received with an additional 22 entries in the novices section.

Senior (Closed) >1900

The Senior Irish Championships were played over nine days from Saturday the 11th to Sunday the 19th July 1998 inclusive, one round per day at the rate of 40 moves in 2 hours, 20 moves in 1 hour and 30 mins to finish. 20 players entered the Senior Section, four aged U-19, three who would shortly play in the Faber and Glorney Cups in Holland later in July: Danielle Collins, Adam Kelly and Michael Dooley. This year's field was slightly stronger than usual with the reappearance of Mark Quinn after a year of relative inactivity, who "just" needs to get his rating above 2400 to became an international master. Mark Heidenfeld made the trip from Germany to be second seed. With the notable exceptions of Joe Ryan, the 1997 champion, busy in a new job and Stephen Brady, last year's runner up, many of Irelands strongest regular tournament players took part: Colm Daly, Mel O'Cinnéide, Richard O'Donovan and Tom Clarke among others.

There were no upsets in round 1 although Ray O'Rourke drew with Mark Quinn.

In round 2 all players confirmed their seeding strength.

Round 3 saw a fine win by Colm Daly over Mark Heidenfeld with a tactical finish where discovered check winning the queen was threatened. On board 2 the other Mark drew with Mel. Ray's win against Richard on board 3 was analysed in the commentary room and confused many stronger players by its complexity.

The fourth round saw Colm and Mel fight it out in a minor piece ending which ended drawn. Ray continued his winning streak by beating Peter Cafolla, making it to the commentary room again.

Colm ended Ray's winning streak by demolishing his King's Indian Defence in round 5 giving him a clear point lead on 4.5/5 over the chasing pack of the two Marks (who drew), Gerry O'Connell and Ray on 3.5.

In round 6 Mark Quinn let Colm sac the exchange for two clear passed pawns which eventually won the game for Colm. Gerry kept up the chase with a win over Ray with Mark H and Mel following.closely.

Colm put pay to Gerry's challenge in round 7 with a win (6.5/7) while Mark H and Mel drew leaving Colm 2 points clear. Mark Q retained his chances with a win over Richard leaving him on 4.5.

Needing only to draw in round 8 to ensure clear first place, Colm played on in a protracted double rook and pawn ending against Richard, eventually winning while the chasing pack all drew with each other.

Mark Q arrived 59 mins 58 secs late for round 10 on Sunday morning and did well to draw with Anthony Fox to secure joint 4th-5th place with him on 5.5/9. Meanwhile Mark H beat Gerry to share 2nd-3rd place with Mel on 6/9 who showed Stephen Scannell how strong a bishop pair can be. Colm beat Tom Clarke in style to finish on 8.5/9, only the third time this has been achieved, to become the 1998 Irish Champion, taking with him the fabulous large "Chess Board" Irish Champion's Trophy.

At the bottom end of the field Danielle finished well on 4.5, winning the Ladies Prize, being pipped to the post along with Brian Fitzpatrick by Stephen Scannell on 4.5/9 who won the U-2100 grading prize on tie break. Apart from getting his picture in the paper, John P.A.Kennedy (Jnr.) consolidated his new FIDE rating with a creditable 3/9 while Colm Fitzpatrick justified his inclusion to even the numbers with another 1950+ performance finishing on 4/9. Michael and Adam both gained valuable experience for the forthcoming Glorney Cup while Liam Porter will henceforth be known as the drawing master! Despite his early flourish Ray finished on 4.5.

Intermediate <1900

The Intermediate Irish Championships were played over three days from Monday 13th to Wednesday 15th July, 1998, two rounds per day, at the rate of all moves in 2 hours each.

Despite the guaranteed £200 first prize the entry was poor particularly among the stronger players. 18 entered including 5 young players. Eric Bennett took an early lead and finished first on an impressive 5.5/6. His will be the first name on a mahogany plaque with a depiction of a bishop specially commissioned and hand carved by Andrew Thomson for the Intermediate Championship.

Open Weekender

This year only one weekender was held, over the second weekend of Saturday 18th (3 rounds) and Sunday 19th July (2 rounds) as the first weekend of the 11th and 12th saw Le Tour de France à Dublin and the World Cup Final as well as other sporting events. 47 entries was greater than either weekender last year but less than their total entry (see entries below). These included 5 young players and one female player who thus won the Ladies' Prize. The Open was won by Stefan Sievers, a German Bundeslige Division 1 player who is working in Ireland for a few months. He defeated Stephen Brady in the final round in a fascinating rook and pawn ending, to win the "East of Ireland Open" on 5/5.

Novices 22 (~20) ? ?

The number of entries was similar to last year which was disappointing although the participation of young players was slightly increased possibly due to the lower entry fee this year for U-19's.

Format

The format was commented upon favourably by some of the players including the following features:

1. Name markers were provided for players in all sections except the novices. This helped players get to know familiar faces by name.

2. Large wall charts were provided for each section as seen in other successful tournaments.

3. Rounds started on time as advertised in general. (Round 1 in the Junior was 13 mins late due to late entries.) This was partly because late entries were reduced thanks to a late entry fee of £3. (The first round draw was done using cards while the other draws were done using Protos 6, except in the senior section where the draw was done manually following an anomalous draw in round 2 by Protos, probably caused by incorrectly inputting results in round 1 as results rather than half point byes.)

4. Sets were provided for all sections. This helped rounds start on time and minimised noise.

5. Players space was increased by generally having no more than two boards per large table and using the large hall for the lower sections when available.

6. The FIDE rules, FIDE and ICU rating lists were available for players to consult.

7. Double scoresheets with carbon copies were supplied for all sections and bulletins were prepared for the Senior,Intermediate and Junior sections. This helped confirm game results minimising errors in the draw.

8. Time controls were lengthened to 2 hrs (Intermediate) and 1 hr 45 mins (Junior) for all moves.

9. A ladies prize was awarded in the Senior and Open Weekender sections.

10. Young players U-19 entered generally for half price.

11. Game commentary on senior games in progress was well attended on two evenings from 6 to 8 p.m.

12. A blindfold simul against two opponents was played by Gerry MacElligott (+2=0-0).

13. Up to date ratings were provided thanks to the rating officers.

The above changes were made in an attempt to raise the status of the Irish Championships in the hope of increasing participation in the years to come. Any comments, favourable or otherwise are welcome. Most of the improvements were copied from tournaments such as Kilkenny, Bunratty, Ballyfermot, City of Dublin as well as tournaments in France and England such as the British Championships. Thanks to the players the chess was played in a friendly, convivial but compeditive atmosphere with no major disputes. Good sporting conduct was observed by all.
