The Open tournament had 47 entries, including 20 players of 200+, among whom were:
Open: Summerscale, Plaskett and Turner shared 1st place with 5/6, each conceding two draws. Turner had the lead with 4.5/5 but was held to a draw in the final round by Lalic, who finished on 4.5 alongside Andrew Cooper (Leeds) and Paul Cawte (SW London). Cawte (graded 165) defeated Gavin Wall in Round 6, which earned him the grading prize. Paul Delaney , Andrew Ledger and Danny Gormally finished =7th on 4 points. Luke McShane was among those on 3.5 points.
Major: (U-175) and Minor (U-145) tournaments were tied by regulars Andrew Horton-Kitchlew and Dan E Mayers, and by David W L Howell, Peter Morrey and Donny Muter respectively. Nathan Ruff (Royston) powered his way to a faultless 6/6 victory in the popular Amateur (U-115) tournament (61 entries), chased by junior Lawrence Lim (5.5/6).
U-1200 - Novice: The 6/6 winner of the Novice (U-75) tournament was disqualified after interrogation revealed him better suited for the Open! Apparently he is a Latvian National Master! First prize passed to Alistair Hung (Writtle) who defeated Killian Delaney (Ireland) in the final round. Killian Delaney finished =4th on 4 points.
Junior Prizes were won by Sagar Deva and Matthew Dignam, both scoring 4/6 in the Minor (U-145). Veteran's Prize went to E Barry Sandercock (4.5/6, also in Minor).
The Family Prize to Paul and Killian Delaney (Ireland) with a score of 8/12. Despite the large entry and small Control Team there were no major incidents. Competitors were delighted with the spacious venue and smooth running of the event, and are eagerly looking forward to the 2nd Kensington Open on 18-19 September 1999.
