LEINSTER CHESS UNION news

Leagues final results after final rd play-offs (Ierne Ballroom, 7/3/98, 21/3/98 and 23/3/98). Summary: Two in a row for Crumlin in the Armstrong Cup after a final round 4.5-3.5 win over closest rivals St Benildus. However, the defining result of the season was without question the champions' 8-0 victory over Bray before Christmas - without that setback third-place Bray would have had very real chances of taking the title.
Rathmines will have two teams in the Armstrong Cup next year after one of their two Heidenfeld teams won outright, trailed by UCD. Division one looks forward to participation by a university side for the first time in at least a decade.
Lucan's victory in the Ennis was by some margin with virtually all of their players, it appears, gaining board prizes. The growing strength of Bray CC is evident from the successes of their various teams across the six divisions.
A close call in the O'Hanlon saw Kilkenny shade it from Rathmines, Aer Lingus and Guinness for the second promotion spot while the Garda CC, in their maiden season in the Bodley Cup, won promotion comfortably.
