THE FAMOUS CASTLECONNELL FISHERY

There are eight beats on the fishery, each beat is approx. a half mile long and fishes three rods. A controlled flow of water is maintained from the parteen dam, which is situated four miles up river, with the result that the fishery is seldom out of condition. Salmon catches on Castleconnell average 500 fish per season. The fishing peaks from early May to the end of July, this is the time of the Grilse run on the Shannon. A 14ft double handed rod is recommended, but on some of the beats a 10-12ft Grilse rod will suffice. There is a short-list of tried and trusted flies,- Garry Dog. Black Goldfinch. Allys Shrimp and the Hairy Mary.

THE MULCAIR RIVER
is a public fishery and there are no restrictions on the numbers of anglers permitted to fish. This is a big spate river with lots of character, lively streams, and plenty of good holding water in the form of long deep flats. It Mulcair rises North of Tipperary Town and flows North West to join the Shannon about three miles downstream from the Castle Oaks hotel. While it is regarded primarily as a Grilse river, it also gets a small run of Spring salmon. The Grilse begin to arrive from mid May, the months of June and July can be excellent, with every rise in the water new fish will arrive right up until the end of the season. The Annual catch for the Mulcair river is approx 2000 Salmon. I have a full Ghillie and Tackle Service and also offer Personal Angling tuition.
