Cobh Ramblers 0 Waterford United 2 (0)
                                O'Donovan (o.g.) 72
                                Kirby 80

Waterford United made a very positive start to their quest for an immediate return to the Premier Division.
On a night when two new-look sides to to the field, it was the Blues who were by far the more impressive, and it was down to the Cobh 'keeper Derek Slattery that it took so long for United to break the deadlock.
When it did come, the first goal was a bit unlucky for the home side as Gareth O'Donovan turned Kevin Waters' cross into his own net under pressure. But Alan Kirby put a bit more polish on the victory with a superb direct free kick ten minutes from time.
So a fine start, but there's a long road ahead for a very inexperienced team. Having said that, with players like Brendan Rea, Robbie Griffin, Alan Reynolds and Karl Gannon still to come back in, it looks promising.
Next up is the already impressive looking all-local Limerick this Wednesday.

Waterford United 0 Limerick F.C. 1 (0)
                                   Lynch (60 pen)

Well, Waterford are hardly in the First Division a wet day, and the Cork referees are back to their old tricks.
The name might have changed, but the red face paint and curly fright wig were very much in evidence as Alan Kelly somehow contrived to award no less than three penalties to the visiting side. Ironically, though, it was from the one spot kick that actually made any sense that Limerick scored the only goal of the game, and the Blues really must look to their failure in front of goal for the reason behind this defeat.
The home side had a hatful of chances in a lively first half, with Eric Bradley and Aaron Moroney going closest - Bradley's header shaving the post after a quarter hour, and Moroney's rasping drive forcing a smart save from Limerick's reserve 'keeper Kevin Fitzpatrick shortly afterwards. The Blues had Michael Devine to thank for not trailing by that stage, though, as he made the first of his two penalty stops after just three minutes, a brilliant left-sided stop from Jason Purcell. Later in the half it was Anthony Tobin's turn to spurn his big chance, as Devine went to his right to keep his goal intact.
On the hour mark, however, the Waterford 'keeper brought Derek McCarthy down in the box, and Tommy Lynch made a manager's decision and took the spot kick himself. Despite the 'keeper getting a good hand on it, it flew inside the post for the only goal of the game. The Blues never stopped trying to score, to their credit, and Alan Kirby was unlucky to see another superb Fitzpatrick save deny him the equaliser deep into stoppage time.
Overall, then, an entertaining game, but a slightly alarming note for Waterford. The goalscoring problem is far from resolved, and the inexplicable release of Karl Gannon this week doesn't help things. Sort it out quick, please, Wichie.
