Friday, Nov 17 Waterford United 2 (1) Home Farm Fingal 1 (0) Moroney (9) Parsons (70) Wood (61)
Waterford United kept up the pressure on the top two with a
competent win over struggling Home Farm at a cold and damp R.S.C.
last Friday night.
Conditions did not favour good football, and much of the game was
a dour struggle, especially after the bright start that the home
side carved out for themselves. Aaron Moroney and Brendan Rea had
both gone close with headers when the young striker opened the
scoring after only nine minutes. A clever flick on by Eric
Bradley from Alan Reynolds was met on the edge of the small box
with a sweet finish that gave Paul Whelan little chance. The
Blues had Carl Mounty to thank for keeping them in front just
after a quarter hour had elapsed, as he dived full length to keep
out a rasping Paul Crowley effort, and that save began to look
even more significant as time wore on, and the dearth of chances
drained the life from the game.
Things looked up a bit in the second half as Barry Wood was
introduced for his first home appearance since re-signing, and
within 7 minutes he'd announced his return in triumph, angling
Alan Kirby's cross fiercely back inside the far post, and seeming
to have secured the victory. But Waterford can often be relied
upon to make things more tense than they need be, and they had to
endure a worrying last 20 minutes after Richie Parsons had struck
crisply home from the edge of the area
It may have been a somewhat jangly finish, but it was actually a
good, competent victory, which rarely looked in doubt, and with
Athlone slipping up this weekend, and Waterford travelling to
take them on next weekend in good spirits, and "afraid of
no-one" as Paul Cashin said next day in a radio interview,
it might just be an interesting next few days at the top of
Division One.
