WELCOME AND COURSE DESCRIPTION

Meeting weekly, in a leisurely and convivial way, we shall read and translate some fine 12th-13th c. French sauce. No prior acquaintance with Old French or matters medieval is assumed; the ludic and lubricious material and hands-on approach will offer a gentle and user-friendly introduction.

The first term’s sessions will engage with salacious narrative poetry; the second’s will be devoted to longer satirical set pieces. Readings will be taken from parallel-text editions (facing-page modern French), and will be set and provided in advance of every session.

Requirements/prerequisites: a sound reading knowledge of modern French, a sense of humour, and a lack of propriety.

The group is open to all: undergraduates, postgraduates, and staff of Dublin universities; and the general public. It is free to students of T.C.D.; others should contact the Director of the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, Dr Sarah Alyn-Stacey, regarding payment.
