One of many World War I graveyards, outside Ypres, Belgium
This is the biggest picture I have here for a reason. I tried to scale this pic down to the same size as the rest, but it just doesn't work, you lose the perspective, so I left it at the panormaic size I took it in. This is just one of the many World War I graveyards in the fields around the Belgian town of Ypres, where some of the fiercest fighting in the Great War took place. Each graveyard is about half the size of a football pitch, maybe a little bigger, and most look like this. There's no apparent order to the graves in most cases, you have germans lying beside english and french. A lot of the graves are just marked "A Soldier of the Great War" or "Ein Detusche Soldat" - there wasn't enough left of the poor bastards to identify them when they were being buried. |
