Welcome from committe member, Mark A. Barrett :-
Salve homines!!, (Latin for: hello people!)
Welcome to the Blakestown Racing Club's Home Page.
The club began its short existance in the Spring of '96. We had a
few meetings to decide how best to get it started and proceeded to
elect a comittee etc. ; we had a few keen race-goers who had been
interested in organising something like this and I had also been
toying with just such an idea.
Previously I had worked at Derrinstown Stud which is just outside
Maynooth and this Arab-owned Stud along with a real love for the
sport had opened my eyes to just such a thing as this. Of course we
needed other similarly minded folks to get it up and running; so with
Brenda Finn, Neil Morris, Frank Turpin & others we were destined to
get it going.
Our first venture through the Summer of '96 was with a
Michael Grassick trained two-year-old filly, 'Peig Sayers' by
'Royal Academy' out of 'Dingle Bay' ... she was a slightly built filly
but we were hopeful that through the year she'd fill out. We also
decided that we might aswell start somewhere so...we went for it.
Peig was not that keen on the job and ran three moderate efforts that
year, but we did enjoy the days out and the bug definitely bit some of
the members.
The past season of '97 can only be refered to as a season
to remember, another filly in training with Michael Grassick,
but this time she was a three-year-old, Tertia, by 'Polish Patriot'
out of a German mare called 'Traumerei'... she provided us with a year
to remember: three wins, two seconds, a third and a fifth...it has been
remarkable! She was a very good second first time out at Tipperary
then she was a decent fifth in a hot race at the curragh on ground
she didn't like, and amazingly she came out two days later and won
the Derrinstown Apprentice race by 11 lengths!!!
... well we couldn't believe our luck.
Following this she won impressively at the Curragh again
before coming a decent third to'Renge' a very decent horse.
Her next engagement at Naas in the Autumn Handicap she confounded
us again with a spectacular performance, winning by 4 lengths from
a good field so we decided to go for a listed race at Leopardstown
in October - she ran her heart out to be an excellent second to a
smart Dermot Weld trained horse called 'Stage Affair'.
At this time it was decided to try our luck in France in a decent
race worth a good few pounds ($12,000) but we were beaten by the
weather and she didn't get to sail for France.
So there you are, after a nice quiet opening season we had
an exeptional second season, and who knows!!! ... with another
Michael Grassick trained filly 'Let's clic together' ready to roll
for this year, 1998, and Tertia running for us in April & May, we
are looking forward to another interesting season.
The club is also interested in visits to top class Studs
in the country aswell as all things equine ... Goffs sales etc.
The committee???...well what can I say?
The four commitee members are the legendary Frank Turpin, the
equally legendary Neil Morris, definitely legendary Andy Tyrrell
and me??....well myself I have been a fan of racing since I was 6 !
...that's not long ago..when I still remember my first race..(1967
Grand National)..where they all fell at one fence; and luckily I
remember all the great National Hunt horses from the seventies:
Captain Christy, Pendil, The Dikler, Lescargot, Red Rum...to name
but a few..and also great flat horses like Nijinsky, The Minstrel,
Brigadire Greard, Bustino..etc etc. Of course I was just a
wee bit too young to remember the greatest of them all Arkle!!
..but have watched so many video's of him and read so much that
it's obvious that there will never be another like him....
So don't forget to cheer us on this year and here's the treble I
recommended back in February for Cheltenham:
- Florida Pearl in the sun alliance chase
- Istabraq for the champion hurdle
- Grimes each way in the champion hurdle
.... not too far off the mark !
Right, stay lucky ..now where did I put that betting slip ?? !!
