Motor Neurone Disease (MND or ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) strikes about one in every 10O,000 people worldwide.
The disorder, strikes over 200 people each year in Ireland and there are few effective treatments.Nerve cell death produces muscle weakness and paralysis.
ALS occurs in two forms. Hereditary or familial ALS, in which a defective gene is passed down through a family accounts for about 10% of cases. The sporadic form, which does not run in families and whose cause is unknown accounts for the remaining 9O%.
