Time after time cynical greedheads exploit the Irish dance music scene with scant regard for anything other than the size of their bank balances. The most repellent recent example was the farce masquerading as the DMC Mixing Championships. In theory the DMC offers a showcase for the finest scratch-mixing talent this country has to offer. However the pathetic disorganisation of the event made a mockery of notions of real competition. The non-appearance of several leading contenders makes DJ Wool's victory meaningless. This year's DMC was little more than a paid advertisement for the fattest leeches on the Dublin scene - Johnny Moy (Influx) and Donal Scannell and Brian Spollen (Stereophonic/Quadrophonic).
The DMC took place in Ri-Ra on the night of September 9th. Ten djs entered the soundclash to determine who would wear the green shirt in the World Championships later this year in Paris. But before a single needle cut the wax his business associates were clearing the obstacles to DJ Wool's eventual victory. Ri-Ra was an obvious choice of venue - two of Ireland's deck specialists are barred from the premises - DJ Mek and Simon T Troubled Soul. Troubled Soul has been applying the electrodes to the flatline Dublin hip-hop scene for the past twelve months with Melting Pot and Heavy Flow. His absence from the contest was unforgivable.
