The St. Brigid's cross

The most common type of St. Brigid's Cross

This tradition is still very common in most parts of Ireland. Using rushes collected locally, people weave them into a cross shape.

As part of this project, our Religion teacher guided us through the steps in making the cross. A number of us from outside the town brought in the rushes for everyone to use.

The raw material - rushes - on the teacher's desk!

Trying to figure out how to construct cross!

Firstly we took one straight piece and then wound another around this to form a cross shape. We kept building on this until we came up with a final shape, like the one shown in the photos.

Hard at work!

"Yes, I've done it!"
We had to wrap a small piece of tape and some rushes to hold each 'arm' of the cross securely.
