The date of Easter varies from year to year. Bede gives the origin of this English name for the Catholic festival of Christ's Resurrection from the dead. He derives the word from the name of a pagan goddess called Eostre (another spelling of Eastre) whose festival came at the spring equinox. Some other modern languages derive their name for Easter from the Latin pascha, in turn taken from the Hebrew pesach or Passover. This acknowledges that the Christian feast is a successor to the Jewish Passover.
The Sunday on which Easter falls each year is determined by when the full moon on or next after March 21st occurs. The Sunday following this full moon is appointed as Easter. The date for Easter each year settles the date for Ash Wednesday and Lent. (see 'Traditions')
