Killeeneen National School
The history of Killeeneen National School dates back to 1878. Liam Mellowes began his leadership of the 1916 Rising in Galway from Killeeneen National School, which was then situated on the Fauba road. The present building was opened as a two-teacher school in 1960.
Today, we have a modern thirteen teacher rural school. Included in our staff there are three full time Resource Teachers, a full time Special Education Teacher, four Special Needs Assistants, a Secretary and a Caretaker.
Over the years we have been continually expanding and improving our facilities. At present, we have eight permanent classrooms, a G.P. Room, a Multipurpose Room, a library, offices and rooms where extra assistance is delivered to children who need it. We have recently considerably extended our playing facilities, creating new pitches and tarmac areas for the children during the winter months. We have also greatly improved our car parking facilities.
In Killeeneen National School, we cater for the many and varied needs of our children and school community and we provide extensive opportunities that help promote the development of the individual child.
Educational Aims of our School
Be tolerant and understanding with respect for the rights, views and property of others.
Develop a responsible and independent attitude towards work and towards one’s role in society.
Achieve one’s potential in terms of academic achievement, aesthetic appreciation and spiritual awareness.
To enhance the academic life of our school we promote and encourage the following:
I.T.: Our school is well equipped with computers and laptops. We also have digital cameras, digital camcorders and interactive whiteboards. The children use these as part of their everyday learning, development, exploration and educational activities, including production of the school’s newsletter entitled The K Files and video editing and production. We are quickly progressing towards becoming an elearning school.
Games: We play hurling, camogie, football, girl’s football, soccer, basketball, hockey and boules.
Choir: Our school choir takes part in Carol Singing for charity every Christmas and also enhances school related liturgical events. We released our own CD of Christmas Carols in December, 2002.
Dance: All children in our school are taught Irish Dancing.
Gymnastics: All children have regular gymnastic sessions.
School Concerts: All children participate in regular school concerts.
Library: All children have frequent access to our school library and are actively encouraged to read.
Musical Instruments: The children are taught and encouraged to play musical instruments, including tin whistle and guitar.
Savings Scheme: The children are encouraged to save and are afforded the opportunity to do so on a weekly basis.
Quiz: With a view to broadening the children’s general knowledge, quizzes are facilitated.
The Arts: The children are exposed to a variety of art forms – theatrical, musical and cultural. We endeavour to have the children experience live performances when possible.
Recycling & Energy Awareness: With a view to encouraging good environmental practice, we engage in recycling. Our school was awarded the Green Flag in 2005. It was renewed in 2007 and 2009 as we advance our recycling and energy awareness ethos.
Science: Our school has been to the forefront of the development of Science in the Primary Curriculum. The senior children have exhibited at the Science and Technology Exhibition in the R.D.S., Dublin and also at the Galway Science and Technology Exhibition. In 2007 our school was given an “Award of Science Excellence”
Our ultimate aim is to create a school where a child can grow and develop in a caring, stimulating and safe environment.
