HOW TO USE EUDORA ON A SINGLE COMPUTER TO ACCESS MORE THAN ONE E-MAIL ACCOUNT

Although the following is aimed at Ireland On-Line (IOL) subscribers, the information contained in it could be used by anyone. What would be necessary for a non-IOL user would be that you change the paths shown for the various directories in the following instructions. Also you may need to contact your Internet Provider to find the various settings for your new configuration(s).
NOTE: This page was written before Eudora released version 3 of the Eudora Light software. I have not altered it to include Version 3, since I am now using a mail client which allows multiple e-mail addresses. I assume that the instructions below will also work for Version 3.

WHY BOTHER?

It is actually much simpler to configure Pegasus Mail or ConnectSoft's E-mail software for use with multiple accounts. Indeed both of these have other features not present in Eudora-Light. However, maybe, like me, you prefer Eudora. In this case, if you have more than one e-mail account, how can you use Eudora on a single computer to access them?

For example, if you are an Ireland On-Line user you may have taken advantage of the family subscription, which entitles you to 5 separate e-mail addresses. On the other hand, you may also be subscribed to another Internet Provider, such as INDIGO, and have an e-mail address from this Provider as well as your Ireland On-Line address.

It is also worth noting that you can access your mail from one server's account, whilst connected via another server. For example, if you have an account with IOL and INDIGO, you can send and receive mail from your INDIGO account whilst actually connected to the Internet through IOL.

The following explains how to set up the Eudora-Light E-Mail package to access multiple accounts. I have tried the instructions in Windows3 and Win95 successfully. I do not have access to a Macintosh, so I cannot guarantee the Mac instructions.

If you have more than two accounts, then simply repeat these instructions for the extra accounts.

Windows3: Multiple-Eudora setup :

Follow these steps to create additional e-mail accounts for Eudora on Windows 3.x.

  1. Create a new directory for this mail account. If your current Eudora directory is C:\IOL\EUDORA then you may wish to create a subdirectory behind that to store the new information just to keep things tidy. The actual name of the directory is not important. For this discussion I shall assume you have named it "BILL". So you will create a sub-directory called C:\IOL\EUDORA\BILL
  2. In the Program Manager, find the current Eudora Mail icon and create a duplicate of it. This is most easily done by holding down the control key while moving the icon to another place (like right beside the current icon).
  3. Now modify the properties for that icon (Highlight the icon and press Alt-Enter).
  4. In the Description box, change the Icon name to something relevant to the name of the e-mail account. Bill's Account for example.
  5. In the Command Line box, add the name of the directory to the end of the current command line. So the line should read something like
  6. C:\IOL\EUDORA\EUDORA.EXE C:\IOL\EUDORA\BILL

if BILL was the name of the directory you created and it was a subdirectory of the current Eudora directory.

  7. Open the Eudora Program by double-clicking the new icon.
The main Eudora screen will be blank. If you are not immediately asked for your personal information, go to the next step [otherwise omit the next step].
  8. If you are using Eudora 1.4 choose "Configuration" from the "Special" menu.
If you are using Eudora 1.5.2 go to the "Special" menu and choose "Settings".
If you are using Eudora 1.5.4 got to the "Tools" menu and choose "Options".
  9. The settings may be blank, or may be the same as your original account. You must put the details of your new account in these settings. Click on the Getting Started icon.
  10. In the POP Account box, enter the full email address of the account you wish to check. For an Ireland On-Line account this will be username@gpo.iol.ie (where "username" is replaced by the username of your account).
  11. In the Real Name box, enter your real name.
  12. Click on the Personal Information icon. The information in the POP Account and Real Name boxes should already be filled in.
  13. In the Return address box enter the email address of the account. For an Ireland On-Line address this will simply be username@iol.ie.
  14. Now click on the Hosts icon. The information in the POP account box should already be filled in. In the SMTP box, write the address of your mail server, which for an Ireland On-Line account is mail.iol.ie
  15. Now click on the OK button and exit Eudora.
  16. The account is now setup.
  17. Note that under Windows you cannot have more than one copy of the Eudora program running at any one time. To check a different account you must first close down any running copy of Eudora.

Example 1 : If the extra account address were mcooke2@iol.ie

Example 2 : If the extra account address were marco@indigo.ie

Win95: Multiple-Eudora setup :

Follow these steps to create additional e-mail accounts for Eudora on Win95.

  1. Click on "Start" then select Programs then Windows Explorer".
  2. Double click on "Desktop" then on "My Computer" then on "C:" then on "IOL" and then on "Eudora". You should now be looking at the "Contents of Eudora".

  4. Close Explorer, go to the "Start" button, choose "Settings:Taskbar"
  5. Click on "Start Menu Programs" and then on "Advanced".
  6. Double click on "Programs" and then on "IOL".
  7. Click once on "Eudora Mail" and choose "Create Shortcut" from the "File" menu.
  8. Rename the file to the name of the person whose email you want to check (e.g. BILL).
  9. Click once on the file you just created, choose "Properties" from the "File" menu and then click on "Shortcut".
  10. At the end of the target field, add a path to the directory you created earlier.
  11. In the case of Bill's mail, the new target line would look like:-
  12. C:\IOL\EUDORA\EUDORA.EXE C:\IOL\EUDORA\BILL

  13. Click "Okay" and then close down both Explorer and the TaskBar.
  14. You are now almost finished. All that you need to do now is configure the new email account. To do this, click on the new mail shortcut that you created from the "Ireland On-Line" program group.
The main Eudora screen will be blank. If you are not immediately asked for your personal information, go to the next step [otherwise omit the next step].
  15. If you are using Eudora 1.4 choose "Configuration" from the "Special" menu.
If you are using Eudora 1.5.2 go to the "Special" menu and choose "Settings".
If you are using Eudora 1.5.4 got to the "Tools" menu and choose "Options".
  16. The settings may be blank, or may be the same as your original account. You must put the details of your new account in these settings. Click on the Getting Started icon.
  17. In the POP Account box, enter the full email address of the account you wish to check. For an Ireland On-Line account this will be username@gpo.iol.ie (where "username" is replaced by the username of your account).
  18. In the Real Name box, enter your real name.
  19. Click on the Personal Information icon. The information in the POP Account and Real Name boxes should already be filled in.
  20. In the Return address box enter the email address of the account. For an Ireland On-Line address this will simply be username@iol.ie.
  21. Now click on the Hosts icon. The information in the POP account box should already be filled in. In the SMTP box, write the address of your mail server, which for an Ireland On-Line account is mail.iol.ie
  22. Now click on the OK button and exit Eudora.
  23. The account is now setup.
  24. Note that under Windows you cannot have more than one copy of the Eudora program running at any one time. To check a different account you must first close down any running copy of Eudora.

Example 1 : If the extra account address were mcooke2@iol.ie

Example 2 : If the extra account address were marco@indigo.ie

Macintosh: Multiple-Eudora setup :

Follow these steps to create additional e-mail configurations for Macintosh Eudora.

  1. Create a new folder for this mail account. It doesn't matter what you call the folder or where you put it.
  2. Find your current Eudora E-Mail preferences file Eudora Settings. Either in your Preferences Folder / System Folder / Some other folder.
  3. Copy the Eudora Settings file to the newly created folder. Rename this file to something like Bill's Account or whatever.
  4. Open the Eudora Program by double clicking on the copied Eudora Settings icon.
  5. From the Special menu choose the Configuration option. The settings will be the same as the original account. These will be changed to reflect the setting of the new account.
  6. In the POP Account box, enter the full email address of the account you wish to check.
  7. In the Real Name box, enter your real name.
  8. In the POP Server enter the Server where the mail is stored.
  9. In the Return Address box, enter the return address of the mail you will be sending. This is almost always the same as the POP account name.
  10. Now click on the OK button.
  11. Exit Eudora.
  12. Now whenever you wish to check the newly configured e-mail account, double click on the Bill's Account (or whatever) icon.
  13. Hint : Create an alias for this file and stick it somewhere else. Also create an alias for the main e-mail account preferences file and stick it with the other one. This way you can keep all the e-mail icons together.
