MARY DOWEY is one of Ireland’s most experienced wine, food and travel writers. A journalist, editor, author and lecturer for over 30 years, she has written four books and contributed to six besides undertaking features assignments for leading publications in Ireland, Britain and the United States.
Currently wine editor of The Gloss, Mary is always on the lookout for exciting bottles to recommend in her monthly column in the print edition or her weekend wine slot on thegloss.ie. She also plays a key part in organising and presenting The Gloss Wine Dinner Series, a programme of sophisticated gourmet evenings which has run continuously since 2007 at Dublin’s Merrion Hotel. She was previously the Irish Times wine columnist for ten years.
Her articles on wine, food and travel for the internationally acclaimed wine magazine Decanter appear both in the print edition and on decanter.com. Areas of special interest include the Southern Rhône and Provence, the Languedoc, Champagne, Australia and matching food and wine. Her book, Food & Wine: Matching Made Simple was translated into eight languages.
As a former editor of the Aer Lingus inflight magazine Cara, Mary is an enthusiastic traveller and an accomplished travel writer. She is an experienced cookery editor, having worked closely with Darina Allen of Ballymaloe Cookery School on ten books, and has also written widely about the arts and interior design.
