This is followed by Didn't Have the Heart, a sad song wherein Deb tries to do the right thing and tell her partner that she's "found somebody new". A superb cover version of the King / Goffin classic Will You Love Me Tomorrow? is next. Slow and quiet, this is a real favourite of mine.
Dancin' In My Mind is not as good as the songs before it, but is still a good slow dance smoocher. Dontcha Want Me Now? is the first of only two non-ballads. Very uptempo, she sings it well, but it's a little restrained. Live it would be much better. Still good, though.
Can't Do It Alone retreads old ground (Try) but is a smashing song all the same: "I know that you're under a strain / You, me and the rest of the world". Think With Your Heart is just soooo romantic! I'm a sucker for all those lush strings. "Be as in love as you think you are!"
Too Fancy, the last non-ballad, is another show-tune wannabe. In this she disses a guy who she likes, but could never be serious about, because "He's just too fancy for me!" Why? Because he's got Armani suits, silk ties, a Mercedes Benz... and all she wants is "a man who can roll up his jeans / And wade in the water and still has some dreams".
You Don't Have to See is a plea to people to let her live her life as she sees fit, and not to try to work out why she likes this guy, or to advise her: "Spare me advice for a change / Just let me go my own way / I am the one in this thing". Two Young Kids is a perfect romantic song, mixing the sentimental with images of old people who have been married for 50 years, and the two young kids who will wish "that they were us" in another 50 years. "Perfect love exists / I've seen it for myself / It's not kisses or moonlight serenades / It's two people holding on to happiness / Before it fades".
Interlude/Tony's Rehearsal is a short extract from the orchestra members learning the arrangements, then it's time for the closer, Let's Run Away. Full of her most striking imagery to date, this song is so breathtakingly beautiful it's untrue: "We could dance under moonlight / Play catch with the stars all day / Let's run away", "Imagine a place / Where pride could cease to exist / And we cannot speak of pain / And angels carry us on their wings / We are kissed / As we bathe in the pouring rain", and "So look inside and come up smiling / With eyes of the adored".
