There are still some remains
to be seen on Whiddy Island, of the World War One United States
Airbase. They are located on the eastern side of the island
and can only be reached by walking northwards along the shore
from the ferry pier.
This peaceful island is well
worth a day-trip, with three 19th Century gun batteries with
accomodation blocks visible on the north, south and centre of
the island. There is an hourly ferry during the summer season
which only takes 10 minutes from Bantry. The pub at the pier-head
in Whiddy also serves food. |
